Guitar Recording - Amp Miking or DI?

I'd do whatever it takes to own a great sounding guitar amp before I moved forward with anything else. Then get yourself a "decent" but fairly inexpensive mic ($500 or so) and mic pre and upgrade them over the years whenever you can afford it. DI guitar tone is cool. But there's nothing like a...

Kick drum miking using a drum with no sound hole

The best way to record that is to tell him to take the front head off or cut a hole in it. Period.

    Recording vocals without a preamp.

Do yourself a favor... unless you want your lead vocals to sound dated and/or distant, don't use any reverb at all on your lead vocal track. Reverb works great on background vox but is best avoided on a lead vox track in most situations - especially if you lack experience recording & mixing...

    Too much ride

Your best bet would probably be to re-record the tracks with better placement on the overheads if possible... If you can't do that try Daisy's suggestion. Good luck.

    nuendo punch-ins

Cool! Is there any way to get it to crossfade at the punch in and punch out points automatically? Right now I'm highlighting where they join with my mouse & using the key command for the crossfade, which isn't the end of the world, but I'd rather not have to do anything at all and just keep...

    nuendo punch-ins

About 50% of the time I punch-in on a track in nuendo 2.2, I get a click or pop at either the beginning or the end of the section I'm punching in to, or even both. It drives me nuts to have to record take after take until I finally get one that doesn't pop, and it causes me to loose momentum...

I defrag my box once a week (probably too often) and I've never had any problems from doing it, but this is a good question though because I never even considered that there could be consequences.

    Stupid compression question

If you can't seem to get a decent level without him still clipping out sometimes and your using a decent condensor/preamp set-up, another thing you can try (if you've got a quiet enough room) is to back him off the mic about 3-6 feet (mark the floor with tape so he can keep his placement...
