Tascam MS-16 amp card became microphonic, outputs continuous wind noise

I turned on the tape machine and the problem was gone. While in repro mode, I tapped the amp/rec card with my finger and the problem came back in full force. Tapping again did not stop the problem. So I will first check for cold solders and try it again. In sync mode it happens if I...

Tascam MS-16 amp card became microphonic, outputs continuous wind noise

This is great! I can tell you've got the manual in front of you. Thank you! I will check if I'm getting a signal at those test points.

Tascam MS-16 amp card became microphonic, outputs continuous wind noise

I didn't check that. I'll check it again tonight. Thanks for the reply.

Tascam MS-16 amp card became microphonic, outputs continuous wind noise

I might be incorrect about this but when I monitored the input things seemed ok but I could still hear a quieter roaring sound that I didn't notice until I switched to RERPO mode. In Repro mode the roaring redlines the VU meter on the tape machine and board. It still passes audio, but the audio...

Tascam MS-16 amp card became microphonic, outputs continuous wind noise

Here's an odd one. One of my Tascam MS-16 rec/amp cards intermittently began outputting a loud roaring noise, and it's microphonic. It's been working fine for years. I wiggled the card to see if it needed re-seating and noticed the card itself is now microphonic. I can hear my finger tapping...

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

No it doesn’t. Just a plastic outer insulation then each individual solid core wire is insulated in plastic. The cable isn’t super flexible but that hasn’t bothered me at all. And I confirmed it’s 24awg wires inside. I first tried finding adapters to fit on the ends that come with the cable...

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

My mistake, it’s 50 conductor. This is the breakout board I used to make the ends of the cable accept the stock wire loom...

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

Thanks for the tip, I’ll try a 20 foot cable this time. I’m actually using a 60 conductor cable, not a ribbon wire. I bought a 60 pin adapter that allows me to screw in each of the wires, then I can plug the rectangular loom-plug into it. Here’s the thread of the mod...

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

I used the thread here detailing the mod. This is the second MS-16 I’ve done this too with no troubles. The guy that did the mod thread here put a switch on his too, so I felt like putting one in. It’s really just for fun, like recording one instrument at 30ips then slowing it down and...

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

Forgot to mention I modded all the amp cards too. (Modded to 15ips) Kinda glad I forgot to mention that, because that was an excellent read. Thank you! Myself and my friends are all addicted to the music we are making with the MS-16. The sound is larger than life and proves Dave Grohl’s quote...

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

SOLVED: the circled solder points are all connected to the same 2 traces. I only needed one wire coming from each of those circles, not 3. Now I can attach the the DP3T switch and change the counter and speed bt sliding the switch.

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

I am starting to think that the same voltage is present on one side of each of the three jumpers. So, technically, I could wire one side of the red blue and black wires together, and then change speeds by connecting either the red either the black or either the blue to it. They just laid it out...

Help Modifying Tascam MS-16 with Multispeed Switch

HI! I’ve recently completed my second modification of a Tascam MS-16 from 30ips to 15ips using the related thread here. This machine had been eaten alive by rats and needed lots of repair. I’d like to install a switch so that it can be changed from 15, 30, or 7.5 easily, like the OP did. He says...

MS-16 30 to 15ips conversion (or vice versa)

If you’re only changing the EQ then you’d probably have to change all the parts back to the old parts. If you just want to change the speed back to 30ips, and don’t care about calibration, then inside the tape machine you have to move the jumper (not clip) from M to H. See the first post in...

    Help identifying capacitors

Thank you, Cory! The caps don’t belong to the MS-16. I mentioned the Tascam because I’m a huge analog fan and I knew someone would help me out. The board is for an experimental medical device that uses radio waves to agitate viruses bacteria and cancer cells to death. It’s called a rife...

    Help identifying capacitors

Hi, I use a Tascam MS-16 1” tape machine in my home private studio. Can you please help me identify the values of 2 capacitors? The tiny blue one says 470. The yellow tantalum says 1 over 25v. What values are these? Thanks for your help, friends.

Local TASCAM M-512 bargain, is recapping unavoidable?

I love my Tascam M3500 32 channel and 16 track 1” Tascam MS-16. They’ve both been easy to work on, and sound larger than life without DBX.

Faders no longer fading? Tascam m-3500

This confirms why the faders were doing nothing except “off” or “20db gain.” It’s mysterious how they ended up this way. The wires are permanently installed in their plugs backwards. Everything is fine until the wires go past the metal wall into the channel area. There, some are reversed...

Faders no longer fading? Tascam m-3500

I know, it’s strange. This board was used in a church before I got it. I used it for 2 years with these funny faders. I just thought my tom mics were incredibly high-gain, haha, I had them turned WAY down at the preamp because the fader would boost everything 20 dB! I guess I just set the...
