    That "tone deafness" discussion...

Curiosity got me searching and I found this video. I thought that I'd cherry-pick a couple of points that I agree with (there are many that I don't, and I was irritated by some of the trite interruptions from the host). 10:36+ "There is so much more to music than just pitch". The amusic dude...

Singing stuff that doesn't suit your voice...

Hi fellow narcissists!!.. (that's what we wannabe vocalists are ;) )... (This is part of my 10-20 second a cappella practice clip series, as the most efficient way to improve your vocal technique.) Singing stuff that doesn't suit your voice... So, you keep learning new 'tips and tricks', and...

    Don't touch that!! (pitch correction)

(I don't own or use Melodyne. Never have, and I am not trying to promote it. But, if this thread suddenly disappears.......I'll know why...) I was watching this Melodyne masterclass video. Experts discussing the finer points of vocals, I find generally interesting. This guy explains himself...

    The "I can't sing" people!

If you have never heard of "breath support" or never tried to apply breath support in singing, then you simply don't know whether or not you "can sing". You basically have never tried. Breath support is so fundamental to singing, it can totally flip your assessment of whether or not you "can...

    Does this harmonize -- follow-up.

I forgot to post this follow-up to my "Does this harmonize?" thread. My problem is that I can't recognize chords or anything. In fact, I can't reliably recognize notes, even if you gave me a reference. (I am getting better with the notes). So I am going to have to put a heap of time aside to...

    mic out at square leg

I don't naturally have the kind of voice for this genre, but I mess around anyway. Now, I've noticed that if I place the mic 12 inches (yes, a whole foot) out to my left, and almost level with my chin, there's an improvement in tone. Kind of unorthodox, but whatdyathink? Is it beginning to...

    Great Vocal Exercise: Bonus!

In my "Great Vocal Exercise!" thread a while back, I said how I'd been practising singing over my own vocals with different tones or vocal configurations. Basically, you sing in one tone, record, and sing on top in a different tone. Helps control consistency of tone. Well, I've got an...

    Airy Sound and Projection

Sometimes I sing like this. It's a style choice, but I sometimes get comments on lack of projection, too much air, falsetto etc. LOAJP001FERP by kickingtone | Free Listening on SoundCloud When people say things like, "too much air", what does it actually mean? Too much air for what? Maybe...

    US/Canada folks...

Even I have heard of Groundhog Day, and I am from the UK. But when I go to Google's front page, where the logo is usually customized to celebrate a relevant anniversary, I see just the default Google logo. So, I'd like to know if Google sets different logos for different locations, and if any...

    Great Vocal Exercise!

[Vocal practice stuff, so forgive the sound quality] Here is a great exercise that I want to share with anybody practising singing. Record a clip of yourself singing. Then sing over it, while playing it back at normal to full volume, preferably through headphones. Try to use a contrasting...

Music has 'gotten very girly', says Bono from U2

Music has 'gotten very girly’, says Bono from U2 | Music | The Guardian Has music become girly? I want to discuss this question and what it means. I don't want the thread to get bogged down too much with who said it, or whether it has been reported accurately enough.

Advice for the singer if you were mixing this?

Hi, I practise singing as a hobby. I have been told point blank in the past (just from a vocal track) "you can't lead like that, but maybe it would be ok as backing vocals". So, I'd like to please ask people who actually mix vocals for advice. What should I look out for, and would either of...

    Stabilizing the 'ee' vowel

Hi! Can I borrow your ears for a few seconds, please? (Apologies to anyone who knows and likes this Beatles song. I've hacked bits of it from long lost memory. I know what it's like when folk mess with favourites, but I always do this with practice stuff.) I heard that the 'ee' vowel...

    My Muffle Test for Vocals

EDIT: I should add that this is all singing PRACTICE (not pristine production!) in case anyone wonders wtf! You may think that the best way to test vocals is to listen to them at a comfortable volume. But I have discovered something else slightly counterintuitive.. How it works. 1. Record...

    Does this harmonize?

Hi! Obviously not a clean recording by any stretch of the imagination, but it's only for practice. I'm kind of guessing, so can someone with a good ear for harmony tell me if this harmonizes and if the voices are balanced? Thanks! I may listen to this tomorrow and find it a complete mess...

    Natural or compress?

When I sing -oo- -ih- or -ee- vowels they tend to be quieter than -aa- -ah- -oh- -ow- vowels. Same thing with speech, except that it is more pronounced when singing. So, what do you tend to do? Leave it, because it is natural? Use compression? Learn to compensate and sing your quieter vowels...

Practice - to reverb or not to reverb?

With a trace of reverb https://soundcloud.com/kickingtone/whstml0090 "Raw" https://soundcloud.com/kickingtone/whstml0091 When you practice songs or parts of songs, do you listen back to a processed version of your voice (e.g with reverb) or to your "raw" vocals? If, both, which do pay more...

Sounds like feedback, but it can't be?

http://soundcloud.com/kickingtone/iltgaw002lv In this short phrase, I sing "a-wandering, along the riverside!" On the "ring" of "wandering", it sounds as if somebody has dropped a spoon on a hard floor in the background. The reason I think that it cannot be caused by feedback, is because I am...
