    Who the hell is dick dasterdly??? Sounds like a damn porn star! Anyway, I have a 488MKII (close to your 424) and I use a DMP3 preamp with it. It cleans things up nicely, has two channels, and won't burn a whole in your pocket-just watch on Ebay or look for a good deal locally...

    Tascam 488 Mk Ii Manual

    The 424 MKII is a 4-track version of the 488MKII so manual will help with all of the trickey functions. I've never used the MKIII but if you check it out you may find something helpful in the manual.
