    cheap mixer

I have a spirit sx. I don't think it's all that noisey. The pres and eq are usable for tracking. The master and monitor section are not as clean as the Mackie 1402 I used to have. And I just prefer the way the monitor section is laid out on the mackie. I cringe a little when ever I sum anything...

    Sm57 Poll

I do really like them on toms. I know where to point them and get a good sound. Sometimes on guitar cab, but I have better options and I like a condensor on cabs a lot. Can work for snare, as well as any mic can in a way, it's all about placement. I tend to like an LDC on snare.

    The Y-Cable

Just get 2 short XLR cables and bring the connections to the front of the rack. I wouldn't do the Y. You'll end up sending phantom power to the outs of each pre from each pre. They might not like that. at all.

    RME fireface 400 into a Shure KSM32

I'm pretty sure you plug the mic into the interface not the other way around. It will be fine. Weather or not it's "demo" quality depends on you and how you use it. The mic and the fireface can get the job done.

    Microphone Preamp or Mixer

Mixer. All the way. Then add on some mic pre's for different colors later. A mixer can be many things even if your mixing in the box. It can be; mic pres! A monitor controller! You can use the aux sends to feed headphone mixes! you can control the outputs of other playback devices like a cD...

Acoustic Jazz Folk Rock Progressive World Pop

Man It's been so damn long since I posted on this BBS. I'm doing some preliminary shameless self promotion. Sorry. Or not. My Album is almost finished. Mixing/tweaking now. I've been working in a bit of a vaccum the last three years so all objectivity is gone. I started out wanting to go with...

Any great alternative to the SM57 for the snare?

EV N/D 308 or EV N/D 408 (or the new N/D 468 what ever it's called. don't have one though) really good on guitar cabs too. Lickily I really like 57's on most toms, so I still have a use for them.

    The RODE NT-1A

The NT-1 is a versitile mic. It's appropriate for people who bitch about people not using the search function and also for people who do not get the information they need from the search.

    Possible purchase tomorrow...

I have an Onyx 800R. no complaints. I'm loving these pres for lots of things. I have the upgrade path in mind too. I doubt I will be selling this one off anytime soon. The converters are better than my MOTU. I'd guess on par or better than the fireface. The DI channels are good. It has a MS...

torn between Lexicon and T.C... !

And oh yeah, there's really no problem not having a switch on the unit. A few of my boxes are switchless. A rack power conditioner is good to have. I just have everything on a master switch. Any power strip would work.

torn between Lexicon and T.C... !

The MX200 can also be used as a standalone ADA converter. If you put it in "dry track" mode you can send a dry signal out the SPDIF, and send an effected signal from the analog outs. Great for getting a little verb in the phones or monitors while recording a dry track. (or just using the ad) I...

    mackie onyx VS. Focusrite OctoPre

I haven't tried the octopre. I've had a 800R for about a month. I'm getting some good drum sounds out of it. I like it more for more bottom heavy sounds. Like Kick and floor toms and big rack toms sound huge and puncy through the Onyx. I like my Aphex 107 or art MP a little better for overheads...

Do I need to care about word clock?

I posted another response last night, but it got eaten. The server seemed to dissapear when I hit submit. :( I'll save myself some time and try to keep this one short. lol. I think that you should try this. Use the focusrite as your clock master. Feed it's BNC clock output to the...

    Shure SM57 or Sennheiser e 906

Recording a lot of barritone stuff the e609 might help to eliminate a lot of muddiness in the bottom. The e609 is a little "thin" sounding to me. (and some others) compared to even a 57. On the other hand I feel the 57 is overall a better mic. I just got an e609 a few weeks ago, maybe just...

Do I need to care about word clock?

You should be able to link them all optically. I'm assuming the Dakota has 4 banks of ADAT in and out? Does each unit have ADAT in as well as out? If so, then simply connecting 3 outs from the Dakota into each unit and the 3 outs of each unit to the in on the dakota should work. If everything...

    Soundcratf Spirit Folio SX

The direct outs are pre and post fader selectable. Download the manual from the soundcraft site (if you haven't already) and give it a good read. It will probably do what you need it to do. I also have this board. I'm not sure exactly what your trying to do, how many people in the group, how...
