So, I took the original pickups that came with the guitar and alligator-clipped them to the pots to complete the circuit: It still sounds awful. It makes a lot of noise by itself. When I touch anything grounded, it goes away.

So far as I can tell there isn't. The bridge ground is the black wire at the top, grounded to the top-left pot. That's the only original wire left from the original hardware. Given that fact, it might be tempting to focus on that as the culprit, but I very much doubt it. That same wire was once...

Yeah, another thing contributing to the mess is the lack of space. The original guitar had smaller, 1/4 inch pots. These are the larger 3/8 inch. The pots I'm using are Dimarzio "custom taper" pots. They're supposed to be 500 k-Ohm ±10% but I had a couple that have been a little out of spec...

Ok, so I got a digital multimeter and checked the pots. It does read zero for everything that needs to be grounded. For my volume pots, I get about 3.4 k-Ohm open (i.e. pot at "10") and about 1.7 k-Ohm "closed" (i.e. pot at "0"). As for added noise, I plugged my guitar directly into my audio...

Oh it wasn't wound versus unwound. It seems to be stainless steel versus nickel. The original pack I bought was a pack of 12 wound, stainless steel D strings.

It is similar. I'm very hesitant to cut off the D string and replace it with a new one because I just put on a brand new set, but I may try that option too.

So, as far as I can tell, my connections are all solid. Although, I'm not very good at soldering. Most of my solder joints are cold. They have that dull, matte finish. Would that have an affect on anything?
