Who's cheap gear do you trust the most?

I'll go with Phonic - especially of late, since some of the newer products really puch above their weight. Latest aquisitions are:- Phonic Firefly 808 audio interface and DYN 2000 dynamic processor. Both products are brilliant and perform well above expectations and the price I paid. I've also...

    Phonic DYN 2000

I took a punt and bought one. It's definitely a scalpel rather than a sledge hammer and provides real precision in eliminating unwanted sound intrusions. The comression feature works well and again, there is good control when smoothing out the rough edges. Really over the moon for the price.

    Phonic DYN 2000

I'm looking to acquire a rack mounted compressor/dynamic processor. I quite like the specs of the Phonic DYN 2000, although I've not seen one in the flesh and I'll have to order this item in. I've generally had pleasing experiences with Phonic gear in the past and I think their products are...

USB Audio Interface Question (having researched already)

We've been using the Phonic firefly 302 USB and it's a great little unit for the money and does a nice clean job with mics. For guitar, I'd always recommend going with a specialist DI/Pre anyway, as you really want to optimise that tonal quality. Most interface preamps at the lower end of the...

What about the rack itself - why so bloody expensive?

The case itself is solid enough as are the wheels. There are a few desirable bits and pieces that can be added for sure - but they're all readily available at our local hardware store for peanuts. The extras sure as hell won't add up to another $400! It will get ramped into a van and put on the...

What about the rack itself - why so bloody expensive?

I finally found an Aus supplier who puts out wheeled metal racks at a really good price - check it out: samson srk 21 | eBay Just had to be an e-bay seller! He also puts out a Phonic firefly 808 univeral at a good price, so he'll get my custom on that upgrade too (I'm currently getting by...

What about the rack itself - why so bloody expensive?

Yeah mate but even then, take a look at what our American friends would pay from somewhere like ZZounds and the variety of product on offer - and it makes you feel a little hard done by. I'm seriously considering doing a deal the next time I'm in China and flooding the market with cheap...

What about the rack itself - why so bloody expensive?

This is an example of what I was looking for: Pro Audio Stash » 24U Rack System » Flat Pack Rack Enclosures » Rack Mount Enclosures » 19 Inch Racking Add the wheels, a couple of pans and some rack mounts and you're looking at well over $600! This kind of setup is useful though, because you can...

What about the rack itself - why so bloody expensive?

Been looking at the price of 19" wheeled equipment racks in Australia - just a short PA rack costs around $650! Nothing more than a bunch of pressed steel parts as far as I can figure - shame Ikea doesn't make em! Do you guys in the states get this stuff any cheaper? We'd be happy down under to...

    New interface suggestions.

Look, a lot of people sneer at Phonic gear but take a look at their firefly 302 usb for a low cost audio interface with most of what you're looking for. I have one and from a recording point of view it's crisp clean and efficient. One or two folks have said they can detect a slight undertone...

    Recording Flute

We're trying to reproduce a few vintage tracks from John Mayall's "The Turning Point". Probably so old now, nobody will remember the album. Great sax and flute numbers all the same! A few issues to sort out still - but will post a track when we're done. Thanks again!

    Recording Flute

Did a quick trial run with my AT2035 microphone. Positioned the mic a little high and angled down. Flute player up close (about a foot) but slightly angled to the left of the mic. Mic located above and evenly between the blow hole and the fist joint on the flute. Flute player a little put off by...

    Recording Flute

From comments here it sounds like we're too far away. I was worried about picking player and mechanical noise, so have used an instrument mic at about 3 feet. Will try close up - thanks guys

    What Interface Do You Use?

I use a Phonic Firefly 302 USB. The whole thing works great - except for the headphone output, which has a miniscule underlying hum. All recording aspects are nice and clean however and just about zero latency (really!). To top it all off the package included Cubase LE and came accross the...

    Recording Flute

We've been trying to record a flute track with varying levels of success. There seems to be three options: 1. Instrument mic on a stand (what we've tried so far) 2. External miniture mic which clips onto flute 3. Internal mic (replaces the flute's end cork) Mics for both option 2 & 3 are...

    I just buy the shoes.

You need to go to a retailer with a sound booth and try a few mics with "Your Voice" If possible, try and record each one, since hearing a recording played back to you can reveal things you don't hear live. I have an AT2035 and most folks (including myself) love it. Id say the the young female...

Please advise on what kind of keyboard to buy!

I'm not so sure folks - there seems to be some retailing blood on the floor at the moment and even online sellers are discounting heavily! I was taking a peek at some e-bay sellers offering a variety of Roland keyboards for under a grand, and whilst at that end of the market you wouldn't get...

    keyboard preamp

Checked everything out to no avail. in the end, I borrowed a multipurpose M-Audio pre-amp from a friend and hey presto - problems fixed! Lots more volume, no hum and much nicer sound. Can't say it makes any sense - but I'll go with whatever works!

    keyboard preamp

I'm conecting my keyboard aux out directly to the line level input on a powered mixer (sterio super HI Z) and am encountering the following problems: 1. Relitively low volume 2. Annoying hum 3. Hum gets much louder past one third volume on channel level control. Before I start chopping out...

    Binks Speaker Test Files

I tried everything to stop the damn resident software from interfering with the output - but with no luck! I downloaded audacity for free as you suggested however - and that in combination with some software I scrounged did the trick. Many many thanks! I've managed to get myself a very...
