    "Hiss" noise on vocal recording

I have an MXL R40 which was modified by Michael Joly. I use it without amplification. I have had no problem doing so. I am aware that sometimes they do need amplification. I am also aware that condenser mics use 48 volt phantom power. But I do not believe that is what would be considered...

    "Hiss" noise on vocal recording

My apologies for going a little overboard. Attached is the dictionary definition of sibilance I found: Sibilance | Define Sibilance at Dictionary.com sibilance Use Sibilance in a sentence sibilant [sib-uh-luhnt] adjective 1. hissing. 2. Phonetics. characterized by a hissing sound; noting...

    Problem with MXL 2003a oktavamod

A cheap mic cord can do that. How are you connected to the computer? Are you going through a Computer Interface (External Sound card)? I would start with the mic cord if you have computer interface. A cheap mic cord will cause problems like that. Also if you are recording an amp and have to...

    "Hiss" noise on vocal recording

There is one big secret to doing quality home recording and that is using quality mics. Samson mics tend to be low end mics and have cheap chinese electrical components. The hiss is also called sibilance. A cheap mic will almost always have sibilance when you turn the sound all the way up...

    Making my microphone sound professional?

First of all a USB mic will only sound good if you have a proper sound card designed for recording in your computer. Usually the sound card in the computer is not designed for serious recording. First of all try getting a computer interface which is really an external soundcard designed for...

SM58 to Tascam US-100 to PC-- excessive static hiss noise etc

The most likely suspect is a cheap cord. You need a high quality cord on your microphone and on any guitar you play on stage. A bad cord can make any mic sound bad. Also if you are recording the SM58 is probably not the best mic to record with depending on what you are trying to do with it.

    Looking to upgrade my DAW

Well Mixcraft has a bunch of "Virtual Instruments" on it. If you have a midi controller (I would suggest a keyboard even if you don't know how to play piano) you can add just about any instrument you can think of. For example I had a song with an Island sound so opted to put steel drums on it...

If you can't afford a U87 what's the next best thing???

That depends on where you send it. For Joly it will cost about $200 to $300. Other people will do just the electronics for $100. Of the one's I've tried Joly is the best.

If you can't afford a U87 what's the next best thing???

Here's the way you do it Buy your self a cheap large diameter condenser mic as cheaply as you can. Send it to Michael Joly and have him modify it. He will remove the cheap Chinese electronics and replace them with high quality components. He will then replace the capsule with a high quality...

    Looking to upgrade my DAW

Since you are used to Mixcraft 5 I would take a look at Mixcraft 6 pro. Also, do you have a Midi Controller. If not you are not using Mixcraft to it's fullest potential. Personally I think Mixcraft is just about as good as anything out there. They get you close with factory settings and you...

Trying to upgrade and build up my studio...What gear do I get?!

Cheap insulation is a foam mattress topper from Walmart. I use two and they seem to work fine. I just put them up when I record and take them down when I am done. Mic. At the least get a large diameter condenser mic and have it modified by John Bonnell or Michael Joly. They will be worth...

    Are Neumann clones worth it?

They're all Neumann Clones Nearly every chinese mic out there is a clone of a Neumann mike of one sort or another. Their greatest downfall is the cheap, cheap, cheap electronics. Most Neumanns have a separate circuit to tame some of the high end that they have. Some chinese mics don't have...

Mic Comparisons: Bonnell Modded MXL 603s v. AKG 170 Unmodded v. MXL R40 Joly Mod

Recieved Joly modded MXL V63M I received my Joly Modified MXL V63M which is an amazing mic. I did some recording with it and wanted to give you an opportunity to hear how good it is. I re-recorded a song I wrote called "Truth is a Lady" and the results are nothing short of amazing compared...

    Anyone messed with DIY mics?

The first thing I noticed with the Joly mod is you can turn it all the way up and there is none of that crackling or other electronic noise. Just silence, unless there is some sound to pick up. Not the same with the Bonnell mod. You still get some noise on the top end. The clarity is...

Can't connect my behringer b-5 properly.

I have mixcraft 6 that I use and you can't hear anything until to click the solo button on the track. Perhaps that is the same or similar with your daw.

Urgent!! Need help in setting my first home studio

I would stay away from dynamic mics for recording. The best mics are condenser mics. Even then a cheap one will never be satisfactory until you have it modded. At the least have the cheap chinese electronics replace with quality components by someone who knows what they are doing. If you have...

Is there a difference in the conversion process?

Not sure what you are asking. If you record on your computer sound card and get a crappy recording it will sound crappy on whatever you try to process is on. A lot of people like pro-tools but for my level of knowledge I prefer Mixcraft 6 because it is intuitive, does a good job, it's cheap...
