    ambient mic'ing w/ dynamic mics?

I have lately been finding that ambient mic'ing gets me much closer to the type of sounds I want than I get with close-mic'ing. That being said, I was wondering if dynamic mics are useful in this context. I ask for 2 reasons: 1) whenever I see anyone talking about ambient mic'ing, it seems...

importance of preamps when recording a loud source?

Hi guys, Thanks for all the replies - and thanks for the lesson, Sonusman - and hey, at least I KNEW it was a stupid question! : ) I probably should have asked my question in a more specific way. Bdemenil actually caught my drift the best. I asked the question for 2 reasons. First, I play...

    boxy guitar sound

People often say "some of the biggest guitar sounds come out of the smallest guitar amps" That said, I recently did some recording using a 4x10 mesa boogie cab and an sm57. I think probably a great 1x12 combo might be a better choice for recording, because you can then push the speaker without...

importance of preamps when recording a loud source?

I have a dumb question about mic preamps: When you are recording a source that is very loud and very little preamp gain is needed, does the preamp influence the quality of the sound any more or less than if the source is quiet and a lot of gain is needed? If yes or no, why? Thanks in advance! Tim

    dumb question on sennheiser 441s

I'm only asking because I understand that there is a difference between the current Sennheiser 421-II's and the original Sennheiser 421's. So my question is this - is there any difference between versions of 441s (other than connectors)? Thanks! Tim

    Pop screen overrated??

I'll qualify my response with the caveat that I have very little experience. That being the case... I totally agree. I greatly prefer the sound I get without the foam windscreen. One way to avoid plosives is via mic placement - I've read about (and had success with) setting the mic up so...

what makes a good room good?

This is all very interesting - thanks for all of the links and suggestions. Here's a follow-up question - are there different schools of thought as to the kind and degree of natural reverb you want in the room? I understand, for example, that Led Zeppelin got some of their massive drum sounds...

what makes a good room good?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I did a quick search and didn't see anything specific on the topic. The thought occurred to me when I saw a comment on rec.audio.pro where someone suggested that a pair of Oktava MC012s would sound better than a pair of AKG C1000s in a good room but...

    preamp with a Korg D16?

Shoot...I forgot to ask one very stupid question... With a Mackie, can you ONLY go stereo out? Or is there way to use all four preamps and go directly out from each channel to record them on a seperate track? It appears to me that this is not possible, unless you can go out from the effects...

    preamp with a Korg D16?

Well, I'd better change my handle so that way you don't go running anytime I show up ! I've done some searching on a Korg D-16 group on Yahoo and people seem to really like the DBX-386 because it has a digital out and apparently this is a great setup with the D-16 because not only are a) the...

    preamp with a Korg D16?

Chessrock, you are the man...thanks for being so patient with my newbie questions and for hooking me up w/ great info! What you say makes a lot of sense to me - I noticed that mixing up mics between guitar takes vastly improved my guitar sound - so I can see how using the same pre on every...

    preamp with a Korg D16?

Wow, this is awesome. Thanks for all the rec's. Unfortunately, I know more now than I did when I started, but I'm still just as confused. On this thread, Empty Planet recommends that if you can't do it right, don't do it at all, because using the same cheap preamp on all the tracks will...

    Akg 3000b

Great stuff. I have a 3000b but I have never had the chance to compare it to a C-1 or a AT4033, so that was really the origin of my question. With that disclaimer, I would second Track Rat's finding that it is a little harsh on guitar cabs. I got a guitar sound i was pretty happy with using...

    preamp with a Korg D16?

Thanks for the reply! Very helpful In terms of my second question, then, is it fair to say that what an outboard preamp would give me vs. the built-in preamp is simply better tone, solid state or tube? And here's another question: are there any solid-state preamps that are in the price...

    preamp with a Korg D16?

Hi, I use a Korg D-16 which has preamps built-in...I understand that these are by definition not going to be as good as a good outboard tube pre...but here's my question...is a Joe Meek or an ART or a low-end tube preamp really going to be that much of an improvement vs. what I've got? Here's...

    Akg 3000b

I'm curious why I don't see much written about the AKG 3000-B when I search through previous discussions. In terms of large-diaphragm condenser mics, it certainly seems competitively priced vs. an AT-4033 or a Studio Projects C-1...at least on musician's friend (which doesn't offer the C-1, so...

guitar and bass sounds, mic preamps and other misc. issues

forgot to mention that i only have 2 xlr in's so using three mics simultaneously is what led to my using the transformer

guitar and bass sounds, mic preamps and other misc. issues

Thanks for the additional feedback. I actually have been using the XLR inputs to do guitars what happened was this - i was trying out 3 different mics (just to sample what they sounded like). I had an SM57 in the XLR input and an SM58 in the 1/4" input (w/ the transformer) and i was surprised...
