Braden, this is a great question! I still remember when I first found out about mixers and control surfaces :) The Yamaha N12 is a combination mixer/interface. It will not control your DAW in the manner you're thinking of, but rather is a way to do mixing "outside of the box" in a similar way...

Man, I have this giant regret that I never went to go see him play or meet him, he wasn't playing too far from me. I saw this amazing documentary on him on PBS and it just warmed my heart to see someone with such an incredible passion for music. He will be greatly missed.
