Steve,You can't go wrong useing the dbx for both recording and mixdown,I had a 424Mk11, its a great deck for portable, live situations.you might want to try mixing to a 2 track deck with the dolby off on the 2 track deck,and if you like the dynamic, keep it.otherwise use the dolby there to

what ever you do, DO NOT buy radio shacks "studio quality" 1/4 inch tape. it's garbage,and is filthy on your heads, pinch roller, AVOID!!!

I also forgot to mention that it's fully operational without the remote, the remote does what the deck does, and what you would expect/suspect it would, let you play/record, ff, rewind, ect from a distance, they come up for bid on ebay too
