Don’t want to crush your spirit, but I think this might only be the second greatest composition in history. I can’t remember the name of the other one but it was a little better than yours. Sorry.
Thanks! I agree with the clicky…assuming you mean the hats. I don’t know if I positioned my snare mic poorly, but I got more hi hat bleed than usual. So when I EQ’d the snare to add a little more pop/crack it brings out the nasty hi hat click. I tried to find the best balance and favored the...
Looking for any mixing help on this one. It’s always the same thing…getting vocals to sit right. Getting drums punchy. Right volume for guitars. Thanks for any insights!
Current mix (Mix 6):
Lyrics:
TO MY FRIENDS
I tried to hear you
But my ears are ringing
The years of strumming
And all...
Ok, so I dug in a little more this evening. I EQ’d the snare to get a little more crack. I had to compensate by pulling some of the upper mid frequencies out of the overheads to keep the cymbals from getting too harsh. I also backed off a little on the snare compression. I think it helped a lot...
The ADk is an amazing mic, this is not a great example of what it does! I started with the unidyne but it’s was a little too harsh for this particular tune I think likely because I was run out through a Joe Meek with too much of the “enhance” dialed in, and you can’t get that out! The ADk was...
I actually use a really nice $3500 tube condenser mic (ADK Z67). My favorite producer uses it all the time and I love his recordings. Funny thing is it’s a very upper mid-forward mic with a ton of detail. I promise you the problem is my singing and processing! I cut a lot of the high end and...
Haha! I just went back to edit my comment to back off a bit. I was trying for a fat snare sound because it’s a slower song. I still want to play w it a little…likely just boost the volume on the snare when the heavy guitars come in…but I don’t want to go crazy. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. Since I posted this original mix I’ve been reading a lot about vocal mixing and came across the idea of mixing at different volumes. I mixed quieter and that’s how I went got to mix 3. I grew with the “rawness” of mix 1, maybe I can keep the...
Awesome, thanks for the feedback. Good call about the snare. I too would like a snappier snare! It’s always a battle between a snappy snare and ugly cymbal/hat bleed in the snare mic.
I need to stop being such a purist and blend in a replaced snare with the recorded snare. It really doesn’t...
A little more tweaking, mostly trying to level out volumes between sections. The back half of the song is louder than the front half, mainly from all those heavy guitars…not sure if that’s something I should tame a bit as well?
Mix 3
I tried to even out the vocal levels and take a little of the vocal’s harshness out. I also added some verb onto the tails of those held out vocal notes at the ends of several phrases. Also made it so you can hear the boom of the floor Tom a little better.
Yeah, fly fishing and music are my passions! When the rivers are blown out or the weather is miserable/windy I’ll be in my home studio writing/recording music!
I wrote and recorded this yesterday. I was messing around with EADABE tuning. I stumbled on it when I was messing around with some chords rooted on the A string. Turns out I didn’t invent it and out lots of people have used it (of course). Super fun, give it a try!
A little slower than most of...
