    What amp/speaker config live?

I use a Peavey Classic 30 (1x12) Combo as my main gigging amp. For a long time I used to gig an epiphone valve Jr which is a 1x8, and I'd just pop a mic in front of it. I really don't understand why anyone playing pub and club gigs would need a stack...

    Ibanez guitars - ultimate suckage

I played an Artcore in a guitar shop when I wasn't even looking for another guitar and it's been my main gigging axe ever since. It's got a pleasingly gritty sound through my gear, but has a lovely responsiveness. A bandmate back in my school days used to play one of the satriani-esque ones...

    Budget Monitors

These ones. They're certainly not high end.

    Budget Monitors

One of the things I love about talking gear on internet forums is I can always find someone to tell me what I want to hear! The HS80Ms are probably a bit rich for my blood tbh, although I could stretch to the HS50M. Have you demoed both? I'm guessing the smaller one doesn't have as good a...

Do You Like (Or Hate) Your Voice?

I was always told I "couldn't sing" at school, but I eventually started singing live, just because I was playing solo or with other non-singers at the time. Now I thoroughly enjoy singing, and I'm confident in it, but I'm not sure how far I like the sound of my own voice on recordings. There's...

    Budget Monitors

I've been using some bookshelf speakers to monitor for a couple years (sold as "DJ monitors & home Karaoke speakers" whatever the hell that means? A guy I was buying a condensor mic off threw them in). So I was looking at getting something better suited to purpose, but I'm somewhat bewildered...

How much does it all matter?

Thanks to all for your thoughts, I've found this a really interesting debate. I'm not sure how clear it was that my question wasn't "does high end gear sound different", which it clearly does but, "does having it matter"? I still think cheap guitars sound great. ;)

How much does it all matter?

I suppose when I said "talent" I meant as producer/engineer as well as an artist. I know if we can hold a room for 2 1/2 hours when we play live we must have something going for us, even if it's just enthusiasm... Well I've got a Tascam US1641 interface into either my laptop or desktop...

    New Harmonica = New Mix!

Ah, welcome to the club. I've been blowing harp since I was 15 and I still consider it my 'main' instrument. You've got a pretty nice tone for someone brand new to the instrument. Not nearly as reedy sounding as most beginners. Good work :)

How much does it all matter?

Sure thing:- my band's last project; my band's current project; other stuff I've done just for fun.

How much does it all matter?

Reading through the threads here, they're often very gear fixated and most opinions seem to be that the kind of cheaper gear I own is a waste of time. So, given that I still feel like the talent is the weakest link in the signal chain, should I be throwing it all away and spending £1000 on a...

    New Members: Introduce Yourself Here!

Well, although I've been popping in intermittently for a couple of years, I've never really introduced myself. Hi. I'm Pete, I'm singer, harmonica player & slide guitarist in a blues band called 44 Pistol. Last year we recorded an album on home gear and self-released it. We're currently...

    Rock/Blues track

Here's a fresh mix. I played with the vocal compression as per your video. Also, I recruited some help from a professional, and we compressed the kick, put a verb on the vocals, to better match the room sound of the band. And had a play with the EQ to try and cool down a spiky cymbal crash...

    Rock/Blues track

Thanks for the reply RawDepth. There was no compression on any individual tracks in that mix, just some on the master bus. Am working through your video now to see if I can get some better results with a compressor on the vocal. Not sure if it's the kick drum way out front? I think it may...

    Rock/Blues track

Some critiquing/help with the mix on this would be much appreciated. The whole band was recorded live in the room & the only overdub is the vocal (& the silly gunshot effect obviously). There's no digital 'verb, just 1 room mic on the live take and another on the vocal session. I've been...

    Life By The Drop

I liked the song. Nicely played acoustic shuffle :) Good strong bluesy singing. The vocal sounds a bit distant to me. Maybe you could bring it up in the mix and try a smidge less reverb? The guitar sounds very twangy. Did you record from an acoustic pickup rather than miking it up...

    Green Bullet Harmonica Mic Help

As a harmonica player and owner of multiple bullet mics (though not a green bullet) I can attest that what SouthSIDE Glen says is correct about controlling feedback. I must admit to being bewildered as to why NYMorningstar is finding it hard to grasp, given that reducing gain in the early...

    Flexible goose neck mic stands

As in tabletop stands? Like this:- I've got one and it's pretty useful for kick and guitar amp duties. I bought it because it was much much cheaper than a proper kick stand and it's done the job well for a couple of years with no sign of it wearing out. There's a little less floor noise than...

Is it worth exporting to 24bit...

...if the tracking session has been done in 16bit? Have been happily recording away with the standard record session set at 16bit wav, not realising that the DAW had reverted to this default setting at some stage. I was just wondering whether there's any advantage to be had from exporting to a...

china cat sunflower - take II

You probably don't really want to hit an octave higher, it'll sound out of tune if one of the lines is even a tiny smidge off perfect. Good harmonies are (apparently, I don't profess to be an expert) about chord theory so you'll probably want to think about pitching it a third or a fifth higher.
