    Footstomping acoustic number

Nothing too complicated going on here really - vocal, stereo mics on the guitar panned hard left & right, a stompbox and a tin of bottle caps for a bit of extra percussion. Your constructive criticisms would be gratefully received. :) http://soundcloud.com/44pistol/black-cat-bone-pete-wearn

    2.8 millon - for a guitar?

I'm very surprised that apart from Blackie they're all custom 'bling' models, as opposed to iconic instruments from rock history. Seriously where are the Hendrix strats? Les Paul's Log? The national from the front of Brother's in Arms? Keef's Tele? Or the one Springsteen's holding on Born in...

    some useful tips?

As much as the advice on forums like this very useful, don't worry too much about the 'right' way to do something - if you haven't got the gear they tell you you need, just have a go and see what happens. Oh, and never wash reds with whites. ;)

kick drum micing, for lve set..

I used a cheap behringer dynamic (a fair bit cheaper than a 57) for kick miking for a number of years. You should be able to get a perfectly usable sound live. I found it paid to experiment a fair bit with placement - one drummer I worked with really seemed to get the best sound from in front...

    recording my band live.

I've never had great results live in front of an audience, so other people here may be of more use, but I'd probably mix sound for the room as I would usually and then use my laptop & interface to put a board mix on one track and then stick the two condensers out front and put them on their own...

    recording my band live.

Do you mean 'live in the room' or live in front of an audience? Assuming you mean live in the room rather than a gig environment, I'd close mic kick & snare and use your two condensers as drum overheads. DI the Bass and keys and put one SM58 in front of your guitar amp and use the other for...

    Getting a 1960s sound

Just had a play with it and it is extremely good, but I'm not sure where I'm going to find £579 to pay for it in 30 days time! Possibly, although that is just how he talks. We've got a sleazy 70s thing happening on one track, and all out strings on another. It's just finding ways to give each...

    Getting a 1960s sound

    Getting a 1960s sound

Just to clarify - this is mostly tracked already. It's a 'client' with a slightly peculiar way of working - we've multi tracked over his demo, but he just sends me lots of musicians and then I need to make sense of the resulting mess (lots of editing where everyone has played at once). So what...

    Getting a 1960s sound

I'm trying to create a late 60s west coast vibe on a track (Byrds, Steppenwolf, Mamas & Papas - the acoustic rock sort of stuff on the Easy Rider soundtrack). I've played with EQ and compression, phasers and even some 'tape saturation' effects, but I can't seem to quite nail it. Any one got...

    Outboard pre-amps for piezos

This is more of a live than a recording question really, but I've just fitted a passive pickup to my resonator guitar and I wondered if anyone had recommendations for a good pre-amp. I've currently got a cheap graphic EQ, which does the job OK, but I suspect something more purpose built will...

Best amp for a resonator guitar?

No pickup? If there's no pickup at all an amp isn't going to do you much good. A quick google for the item suggests it comes with an on-board piezo - the kind of pickups that come with electro-acoustic type guitars. A friend of mine uses a Marshall acoustic amp and I quite like the tone, but...

How would you mimic the sound of a theramin?

I'd go with the guitar option if that's what you have kicking around. If you get the slide up past the 12th fret and give it loads of vibrato whilst 'violining' with the volume knob (or just automate in your DAW) that comes pretty close in sound. There's theremin sounds on Captain Beefheart...

    Microphoning Guitar cables....

I've tried it with two guitars and two amps, so I'm pretty confident it is the cable. The previous cable got noisy after several years of being gigged twice a week, walked over, coiled & recoiled. I have other (shorter & less useful) cables that don't have any problem at all. I've contacted...

    Bash these mixes for me....

These are my first serious efforts at workable mixes for a long project I've been working on with a friend. There's a few comments that have been added by another person involved in the project, with my responses, already attached, but feel free to add more. Any polishing up ideas would be...

    Microphoning Guitar cables....

Crackles primarily, only happening when you move the cable. Yes. The new one is a Fender branded instrument cable. The old one is also shielded, but I'm less concerned as I've already had several years of weekly gigging out of it.

    Microphoning Guitar cables....

Educate me a little please folks... I was under the impression that 'microphoning', as in the cable transmitting sounds of it's own movement, was due to age and abuse. I've just taken delivery of a brand new Fender Koil Kord, and it's microphoning every bit as bad as the cable it was supposed...

I dont really have a stable price for my recording sessions :\

When I was first getting to grips with home recording I offered to track some songs of a friend for posterity as a bit of recording practice, and was offered a bottle of whisky in exchange. Two years later I've had 20 different musicians through my dining room to add tracks to the sessions, and...

Guitar and Vocals at the same time

I agree you'll probably want to invest in an interface, but there's no reason not to have a play around and some fun before you get one. I did a number of my first demos using a similar set up to what you have. This was one of the better ones. I used a standard dynamic vocal microphone I...

    Live recording...

Just a thought, but I'd actually like to do some tracking at a gig (mainly to improve on the sound for some Youtube videos). Anyone done much live recording at small venues? I'm wondering how you'd go about it? I'd be using a tascam US1641 into my laptop. I've got a bunch of dynamics, 2x...
