What's your most important piece of mastering hardware?

You won't find to many summing boxes used in mastering because there is not much to sum. Instead you will find mastering consoles such as Crookwood Console or Manley Backbone, or the Dangerous Mastering Console etc that are used to route/assign/switch the analog inserts as well as the option to...

What's your most important piece of mastering hardware?

+1 on what John said. monitors, room, conversion first. Most used hardware, although in small doses = compression. One that's slightly affordable = API 2500

    Well said.

    Stem Mastering

Sometimes mastering from stems can be advantageous to a project coming out it's best. I've never been a big fan of working from stems myself but have come to accept that there are no hard and fast rules concerning audio (especially in this day and age) and it's really "Whatever works"

Mastering For Radio Play (Am and FM)........Help

On the first song it sounds like the organ is over powering things a bit and the sax needs to be featured more in the mix. I would tighten up the mix a bit, maybe for a little more definition all around before mastering.

    Use 'Stems'?

I think either way would work. It's like 6 of one / half dozen of the other. Mix the intro separately or mix it with the song... wouldn't take long to try them both and see what you think works best.

    Worst sounding Cd's ever

I think it's more due to the first wave of 16 bit converters, not being all that great sounding.

    Best Sounding CDs Ever?

For rock, I think Rage Against The Machine's self titled first album is up there. For reggae, Bob Marley "Legend" and Ziggy Marley "Dragonfly"

    Song order, who decides?

^ Another determining factor concerning gap length is how the song before ends. A long fade out, usually will bring the next one closer and a quick cut pushes the next one back. Ymmv of coarse but I find gaps these days shrinking from under a second to right up against or slightly cross...

Getting songs up to a commercial volume??

Nice. The Beck album is amazing. There is one song on it "Hammer head" that is smooched but the rest is stellar. Features Josh Stone on a couple cuts, and a symphony orchestra on many cuts. Give it a try.

Getting songs up to a commercial volume??

Your in luck... Hear is a review of the vinyl: The Sound Chris Bellman, who has become one of the preeminent vinyl mastering engineers today, is aided by an obviously well-recorded album. Mojo carries a full, warm sound that is well-balanced, but particularly good at showcasing the creamy...

Question: For the experienced mastering engineers

I would imagine that there is a patch point that you could access directly on the monitor section of the console, so that you didn't have to pass through the additional channels and bussing. See if there is a digital input for "2 track". Are you accessing the channel strips through their...

    Mastering / Conceptual CD

    B) If the interludes are going to have their own start i.d. separate from the songs, I would send them separately. If they are going to be part of a song as an intro, I would pre mix them attached to the song. I would also be good include a mock up of how you would like cross fades and...

    Mastering Equipment

I would hold off and resist the temptation to go outboard until you get some projects and experience under you're belt. Once your ready, I feel compression would be the first thing to go for as the in the box solutions just don't measure up yet to what a fine outboard compressor can do... Even...
