Yeah I recently got one of these and am really digging it. I put NOS tubes (Raytheon black plates for the preamp tubes, GE's for the EQ tubes and GE JAN 12at7's) in it and it sounds great. Not quite as nice as my LaChapell tube pre, but it cost about half as much (even after the retubing) and...
yeah that was (formerly) my mic in those photos incidentally. i spent $50 shipping it to MJ, having it shipped back to me and then shipping it to Gauge (who gave me a full refund of my purchase price incidentally) in the name of science :)
You're right on that-- my apologies. I misread the first paragraph of that last post you made as being in line with a few of your previous posts in previous threads on the subject like this one (particularly the last paragraph, but I don't want to take anything out of context)...
still sticking to 'there's nothing new here' and 'the brand name guys aren't alarmed at all by the chance group buy' i see :)
well you could very well be right, but if nothing else if he does this regularly for a few times the infrastructure he already has, it could help obscure the emerging tnc...
also it occurs to me that this also probably may be a wise move on ah's part if this is one way that home recording audio gear consumerism is going to be shifting. it reminds me a bit of the whole physical music distributable vs. digital music download thing. if this is going to be a trend...
i'm interested, though i wouldn't be surprised if i get the stuff, try it out and end up selling it like i did with the chance gb stuff. i tried to register on the pmi forum, but i couldn't get a capcha image-- weird. i definitely agree with the types of things i saw you post on the pmi...
Reluctantly for sale a Sovtek MIG-50. I got this a few weeks ago and love it, but I need to scrape some money together for mics for an upcoming project. This was the last amp in so the first one out.
Labeled by many as a poor man's JCM800 and Bassman melded together. The amp sounds and works...
Agh-- I really hate to do this, but I'm trying to quickly scrape together some funds for another purchase. I bought this fully assembled from Five Fish about a month ago. It is the model with the input transformer. It sounds great and only has about an hour of use.
Here's a chance to get one...
ah, well, the fethead requires phantom power though so you would need a phantom power source or a preamp anyway to power the fethead.
either way it will probably get pretty good results-- either Fethead + phantom power source/preamp to the line input or Preamp (w/o phantom power engaged) to...
Doesn't the mixing desk have preamps? Is it a problem where phantom power applies to all channels? If not, can't you just use those pres or do they not have enough gain. If the latter, a Rane MS1b might be a good fit, just don't use phantom power.
This might provide some insight

and yeah-- RNC, RNLA, or FMR's new single channel comp, or a DBX 160a/x/xt
It's a pretty new product, but if you Google it you'll find some comments from at least a few folks who have them and have tried them out. It seems that at least a couple have compared it to the similar offering from Rode and find it to be superior (less noisy).
I'd think that the vocalist, mic and acoustics of the room would have had more to do with the quality of the recording than the tube upgrade. I'm definitely sure that the tube upgrade helps though.
I have no idea about the Mico. It has a nice A/D built in and a bunch of features for sure...
If you only record one or two channels at once and don't foresee that changing, why not shift from quantity to quality? You have a bunch of extra channels of pres that you probably don't need and a number of mics of the same type. If you're just recording yourself for now, maybe you can pick...
The UA stuff generally come with kinda crummy tubes now... JJ's IIRC. I had an m610 that sounded noticeably better after I swapped out the JJ 12ax7 in there (though it came with a NOS JAN GE 6072a)
I've tried a lot of stuff in this general price range and I'm a big fan of the Langevin Dual Vocal Combo. If you can find a good deal on one used ($1100 or so), it's a great deal-- it combines their dual preamp/eq with their ELOP compressor. There are two versions-- the later one lets you use...
