Guitar 'truths" that you believe are myths

Wow, a lot of reading I have to do to catch up. Not attempting to side rail.... Did a trip out of town doing some work, back of the suburban loaded with tools and the like. Last minute nephew asked that I bring a guitar. Not wanting to bother too much threw one of the cheap Rogue guitars I...

Guitar 'truths" that you believe are myths

I don't believe that is true. Lefty yes, upside down no. Point taken, and you have a good one, but overstating does not serve it well. Cheers to your son, sounds to be a well rounded accomplishment to himself and an asset to anyone who has to pleasure to his presence in a musical context. You...

    What defines a great guitar?

Sorry fellas, just a little attempt at levity, semi Yogi Berra quote. I've enjoyed the discussion, please continue.

    What defines a great guitar?

When it comes down to it, a guitar is a tool, a tool to express thyself. Important to have the right tool for the job, in good working order. 90% of playing is physical, the mechanics of musicality. The other half is mental, tamed expressive noise. Don't quote me on that, just a shot in the dark.

    The process

There is nothing wrong about taking a walk in the footsteps of musicality, artistry. Whether consciously or unconsciously, knowingly or unknowingly. You are a product of that. If you don't believe it you're lying to yourself. There is a particular songwriter and later recording artist who I was...

    The process

I think as some guy who is not on the radio or whatever you're going to get a certain amount of "that sounds kind of like" responses from people. Why I can't say. People are looking for something familiar? We all have influences which bubble forth in our own efforts at songwriting? I don't know...

    Unusual Guitar

I once had a Celebrity Ovation acoustic, sort of in a clutch needed something I could plug in without breaking the bank, limited budget college student at the time. Cheap guitar was cheap, uncomfortable to play piece of junk, neck warped & twisted, bellied behind the bridge, concave at the sound...

    Time for another one?

I have an early 70's FG75, first (acoustic) guitar I learned on. That little guitar went everywhere, keg parties, camping, road trips, bedroom jams...I used to practically sleep with it. To be honest I didn't take very good care of it, it was for playing not pampering. By about the late 80's it...

    Horrible resonances

I hear it plain as day from the first clip posted, or at least what I think you're hearing. An overtone, especially during the Am chord. If it was a note, for comparison, it would be the E note played 5th fret second string, then during the G chord , briefly the G note 3rd fret 1st string. At...

    double tracking

Personally I've never tried it.... They say or there is a school of thought where you can triple track, or take a single copied track, detune ever so slightly, minutely to where it is essentially imperceivable, one above and one below the main track to fatten a vocal. You don't really have to...

Oh noes mic dropped in water

I'd removed the ball before second posting here, everything actually looks pretty clean. Looking inside the ball the foam material looked maybe tinted by red dirt tainted water, but who knows, I've seen that black material take on a faint red color...age related or whatever. I'll hang onto it...

Oh noes mic dropped in water

You guys are a riot. Somebody left it out in the enclosed side porch, no climate control. If there was any water still in there it probably froze, which is awesome. Looking in at the wind filter material it is a wonderful sort of red (dirt) color. Eh, I may plug it up at some point, but may...

Oh noes mic dropped in water

Correction mispoke, it was a 58, not that it makes a lot of difference I would think. Gear is gear, but not an expensive replacement cost. We had a sh*tload of rain in a short period of time the other day/night. On top of that one of the gutters I had missed cleaning and the downspout clogged...

Oh noes mic dropped in water

An sm57 got accidentally dropped and submerged for a period of time(overnight) in kind of muddy/dirty water(don't ask. I swear I wasn't recording underwater doing a cover of Octopus's Garden). I rested it upside down to drain out the water. Anything else I should do? Is it going to be alright...

How do you put your thoughts into lyrics?

Well dang, that's about the saddest tune I've heard as of late. A little piece of advice that can be helpful to some, a tool,....write in third person. It can at times be easier or liberating to tell your story as though an experience of another. A fictional character. Rather than "I", say he...
