A few Questions for the experienced.

Why do you always start with the low end? Just to be clear, I ask completely out of ignorance and not because I object to the suggestion. Also, I assume that this would be true in a listening\mixing\mastering environment since one can expect broadband signals in such an environment but what...

    Acoustic Guitar Resonance Problem

Yes!!! Yes I can!!! And it was so OBVIOUS! I was muting the strings below the nut, but the strings were still ringing above it. If I wedge a cloth underneath the strings up by the tuning pegs the problem is completely solved. I was thrown off by the fact that the guitar body was amplifying the...

    Acoustic Guitar Resonance Problem

Yes. If I strike my strings with a pick while my left hand is completely muting them the resulting resonance is quite evident for 4 seconds or more. The peak of the resonance is either bimodal at G5 and A5 or there's one mode and it's broad enough to pick up both G and A. Perhaps my ears aren't...

    Acoustic Guitar Resonance Problem

Hi all, I'm recording my acoustic guitar (Guild GAD-30r) in my (fairly low-budget) home studio. One thing I noticed in the process is that the guitar has a significant resonance centered around A. I'm haven't figured out which octave, but it's relatively high. If if I play a chord and stop...

    low watt amp recommendations?

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the difference (if any) between using an attenuator and simply turning the amp's master volume down? I guess I'm assuming that the amp has a master volume knob.

    Wimpy Vocals

mattdee1, You make a good point. I experimented a bit and it sounded better than what I had been able to get before, but I'll make sure to do my due diligence in the future rather than just deciding now. Thanks for the tip! --John

    Acoustic Guitar Tracking Mic Placement

Oh, no. I don't mind honest advice in the slightest. I have to give and receive extremely honest technical advice all day at work. I prefer it. I think I'll post an mp3 sometime this week of just a little acoustic noodling to see what the tracking\mixing suggestions are. If nobody complains...

    Acoustic Guitar Tracking Mic Placement

Yeah, there sure are a lot out there. I currently just run into my mbox2 pro. I've been toying with the idea of picking one up in the $1K range but I wasn't sure how wise of an investment it would be.

    Acoustic Guitar Tracking Mic Placement

Thanks for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. Thanks for defining "close miking" for me. I've never seen that definition before but it's very helpful. I guess I'm trading off between room sound and shifting in and out of the sweet spot. I'm considering getting one of those guitar...

    Acoustic Guitar Tracking Mic Placement

Oops..sorry! I should have been more clear. I didn't mean the videos. There's a little flash mp3 player in the upper right-hand corner that will play the actual album track for you. Sorry for the confusion! --John

    Acoustic Guitar Tracking Mic Placement

Cool. Thanks. I'll give that one a shot too. I'm guessing I'll end up with just one mic that sounds good. Does this sound DIed to you? i don't have the ears to tell. http://www.last.fm/music/Alice+in+Chains/_/Nutshell?autostart http://www.last.fm/music/Alice+in+Chains/_/Brother?autostart...

    Acoustic Guitar Tracking Mic Placement

Here's a question with somewhat of a long stetup: I recently spent some time researching mic placement and choice for recording acoustic guitar. For the record: I have a decent little all-wood Guild and I track in an untreated room in a suburban town home. I am most interested in grunge-era...

    Wimpy Vocals

Just an update - yesterday I re-tried my vocals with a new SM58 I bought. I have two things to report: 1) My voice sounds MUCH better with the SM58 than it does with the Rode or the AT I mentioned earlier. 2) Double tracking makes a much bigger difference than I would have guessed. I'm not...

    Can anyone mix my track

Wow. This has to be one of the coolest threads I've ever seen on a web forum. I've learned a ton by reading and listening to what everyone has put up. That tutorial on critical listening that Doulos24 posted was fantastic for me. Speaking of, where's the final mix, Doulos24? I didn't see it...

How do you get that rap delay effect?

You know, I can't seem to settle on a good workflow for doing that with automation. I would love to know what your approach is. If I route the main vocals to a delay and automate the fader on the delay track to go up and down when I want delay then I hear previous unwanted words in the delay...

    Recording Acoustic guitar

Yeah, I've been micing the hole when I record my acoustic and I can testify that it's a habit worth breaking.

How do you get that rap delay effect?

I Googled the song and listened for the part you are talking about. I think you can get the same effect with just about any delay plugin and the appropriate delay time and feedback settings. The key here, in my opinion, is to make a copy of the phrase "up" or "what's up" and place the copy on a...

    Wimpy Vocals

Cosmic, Thanks for the quick and excellent reply. I've had some success with double tracking in the past so I'll definitely take your advice and stick with that. The harmonizer idea sounds good too. I'm certainly not above a little fakery :) When you mention adding harmonies that my voice...

    Wimpy Vocals

I'm not sure whether this belongs in mixing or recording, but here goes. I can sing in tune, and I can sing with decent phrasing, but my voice is wimpy. I don't have much breath control and I don't sound terribly convincing. I'm working on improving my vocal technique, but I'm specifically...
