The usual. Drums, bass, two or three more instruments, vocals.
Is a bottom-of-the-line iMac enough? If not, what Macs will work?
Whatever I record by myself will be done at my house. For recordings involving anyone else, it will be at someone else's.
So - you're saying I need a DAW and an ADAT?
Hey!
I've reached my limit with my Tascam and am thinking of building a DAW. Recordings would range from two to ten tracks.
I know I want a Mac, and I know I want to use Logic Pro. I'm wondering:
- Will a bottom-of-the-line iMac or MacBook Air do it? If not, what would?
- Other than mic...
Yup. I'm not a singer or a pro musician. I just write lots of songs. I do love gigging, but again, I'm not a pro. Pubs and local festivals are about my level.
I write mostly blues, country, folk, mid-tempo rock, and Americana, whatever that is.

They're selected from about 130 tunes posted on other pages of the website. I chose them mainly based on...
One trick: LEARN a bunch of songs in whatever genre interests you. Learn to do effective renditions of maybe some John Prine, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Reckless Kelly, and so on. Or whichever singer/songwriters turn you on.
By the time you're a year into covering the...
Update: Made a video, but it didn't pass muster with my wife. She thinks I need to redo the vocals. Easier said than done. Oh, well. Back to the ol' mixing board . . . .
Update: A friend is going to lend me a device he uses to kill interference from things like fluorescent lights. It is that kind of loud buzz, so it's worth a try.
Just plugged my new Pro Channel II into my Tascam. I have lots of questions, but the first is the most basic:
There's a loud buzz through the headphones. I tried the phase inverter button, but it made no difference. I tried switching mics, but that didn't help, either.
So, any suggestions on...
