How loud is that furnace? When that things kicks on, it could seriously impact your session. I'd say the first thing you want to do is find a way to keep that thing from being a factor. That will likely be a major factor in the design and layout of the studio.

How big is the entire room? You mentioned the booth being 6 x 8 which would yield a roomy vocal booth, but it may be tight for other purposes.

Heck, for $100 you can get 5 new Behringer XM8500's. For spoken word recorded in the field to be used on a podcast, it should do the trick. I was curious so I ran a few mics against one, including a Gefell M930, and it wasn't bad.

Even though MAudio claims it can be handheld, a condensor is still going to be more sensative to ambient noise, especially in a public place. An alternative would be the Electro Voice RE635A. It's a dynamic, but a workhorse in the broadcast industry, especially for journalists in the field...

Is the narration thin sounding in your mixing room? Have you listened to the audio using different sources such as in your car, a friends stereo and other places outside of the room you mix in? The TLM103 is a good voice over mic so I'd look at other things that may be yielding that thin...
