    REACOMP parameters?

Pre comp is as suspected a lookahead. To get a really REALLY good feel for how it works, put ReaComp on a sustaining track like a distorted guitar Set the guitar track to 4 trackchannels and set ReaComp's detector to aux input Send a send from a kick drum or snare drum track to trackchannels...

how to accurately use the reagate plug-in for noise-reduction/removal

As the post by ianuarius said, ReaFIR would usually be a better tool once it is recorded. take aaroncoleman's advice if you can to try and keep it from happening in the first place

    mackie 820i

It took Justin intercepting the midi messages from the MCU to get MCU native support in reaper. Mackie wouldn't give us the time of day. After he got it running he sent them a pic of an MCU with "Here comes the shitstorm" on the display Mackie claims theyre using Dice II on their larger Onyx...

    help a brutha out

the reaper chat is good for this sort of thing too before you get too frustrated. Don't start throwing money at things until you diagnose the problem. Justin has some Zoom units and loves them, so I'm sure there's a way to get you up and running

$1,500 Setup To Record Voice And Guitar To Computer

With such a kickass computer to start with, I'd say: Motu 8pre Decent DI box, el-cheapo or whatever 100$ or less Good multipattern condenser mic 300$ or so (or a pair of them) The rest on monitors and environment as Jeff suggested. Darrin's UX2 is a great suggestion too. Quick and smart

    Rendering a multi-track wav.

From Justin: "create a routing track and route the stereo tracks to channels on the routing track (and unroute those tracks from master)" "have a multichannel master, and multichannel child tracks, then file->render"

My main mixing PC is something like that. I think its a 4400+. I never run out of power, but I dont run 4000 fx on each channel. Usually 32 track projects, eq and gate on a lot of them, 5 channels of drumagog, some compressors, etc... I guess it depends if you run VST-I's too

    Should I go for it?

There's no crippling, besides a nag screen once a day on the trial version. We like to call it "honorware" The main deal is, we don't want you out recording in the field, all of a sudden have to reinstall some computer parts or borrow a PC or whatever and then find out you can't run your DAW...

    solid vs tubes in metal

Depends a lot on the type of sound you are after. The feel based dynamic part of tube preamps are absent in a lot of the more compressed sounds, and can be done fine with transistors. Even for styles of metal requiring tube distortion for the nuances, power tube behaviour is often more of a...

Getting ready to record my first artist

Take as many pictures as you can and write down as much as you remember as soon as you can. This will be a fun and probably horribly frustrating, but still fun time for you

    New CPU or Mac mini

There are a lot of 400 dollar quad recipies in the reaper forum. I use an amd 4200+ for my main mixing computer, but I enjoy tracking on the Koama Kompound's 400 dollar quad a lot

Help me leave ADAT world with Vegas

An RME 9652 will allow you to use your adats as a/d converters for vegas. This would ease the transition greatly. The reason you don't see too much activity at the vegas forum is that the loudest and snarkiest vegas audio users have mostly left for reaper. You wont need the HDSP version of the...
