Yes, this is what I'm noticing. They're really hesitant pretty much everywhere except during the big "CHA-LA-HEAD-CHA-LA" in the chorus.. then that line has all these stacked harmonies.. makes it leap out a little unnaturally.. The rest of the vocal performance needs that same confidence.

Big improvements with the second mix. Guitar and cymbals much more prominent. Piano part under the "For someone half as smart" could be a little smoother, which is something I didn't notice with the vocals in place, and I might not notice again when the vocals are back.. What are your plans for...

Or split the section, lower it, and blend it back together.

I slip a side off for vocals, but everything else I always want to hear it in the cans, panned where it would be in the mix, at about the same level.

I track with live guitar in headphones all the time. And every time I've been in a commercial studio, that's how it was done.
