What is the best device to sync two Tascam TSR-8 machines?

In fact, you don't need a synchronizer anymore to run your Mac DAW in sync with your tape machine). Just stripe some SMPTE on your tape, feed it back into your sound card and use this little software to generate MTC and to send it via IAC Midi Bus to your Logic / Cubase / Pro Tools / whatever...

    Beginner/Entry-Level Options

I've actually low-passed quite a few mixes from around 10-12k because my ears don't like the super high stuff on cymbals and the like, so I don't think that'll be a huge deal for me. Thanks for the heads up, though!

    Beginner/Entry-Level Options

I always prefer to learn how to maintain my equipment myself, even if later on I decide to take it to a professional. In this way, I can be sure that I'm not being hosed or up-sold in the moment with the stress of trying to get my gear fixed. Thanks for the tips! :)

    Beginner/Entry-Level Options

Update: I'm ready to make a purchase. :) Two 8-track tape machines came my way: A Fostex R8 ($400) and a Tascam 388 ($300). They both take the same 1/4" 467-type tape and I've sourced a place locally to purchase new, unused RMGI-EMTEC spools and reels. I'm inclined to purchase the 388 because...

    Can you say CREATIVITY?!

This is some of the most outside-the-box, creative home recording ideas I have ever seen or heard of! For example, he 'cut' some sounds onto a CD with a sewing needle attached to a speaker (emulating the way old vinyl records were made) and then played it back on a turntable (IT WORKED!) and...

    Beginner/Entry-Level Options

Thanks for your responses so far. A question, though: "Why would Fostex tape cost less than Tascam tape?" I'm assuming it's tape width? Turns out there's an MS16 nearby for $2000 but I think I'll keep an eye out for one of the 8 tracks that you all have recommended. As far as tape width, where...

    Beginner/Entry-Level Options

I've been recording music for years now. I started on a 2 track cassette recorder, moved up to 4 and then 8 track and then graduated to digital recording in the early aughts. These days, I feel that I'd like to take a few steps backward and get back to using tapes and analog equipment. A big...

    Single Mic Recording Challenge

I suppose that in order to truly make this a "technique" thread, I should speak a little on how I set up the mic. For the bass, it was straight at the speaker in my 2x10 cab, just a little off centre. For the drums, it was beside the kick, maybe 4" back from the batter head, and about the same...

    Single Mic Recording Challenge

The other day, I decided to give myself a little challenge: Choose one mic and use only that mic to record every track. Further, do only one take of each instrument and use as little post-processing as possible. Finally, do everything you need to do in 24 hrs or less. For my first one, I chose...

    EQ and phase problems

Funny that this came up here... I just posted this vid on my facebook page like three days ago. Its a very clear and concise explanation of Linear-phase and Minimum-phase EQ by FabFilter. Definitely worth watching. It goes without saying that you should make sure you use headphones or proper...

    shure 55s

its by no means a quality recording mic. it's a looker - that's about it, although I have heard it used to good effect as a drum mic in a recording environment.

The Everything "EZDrummer" and "Superior Drums" thread.

"From the available choices" is exactly what I mean, Miro. That is to say, I cannot use the copper snare from the pop/rock kit with the dry ride from the Nashville kit, for example. This sucks, imo I feel I should be allowed to mix and match as i please, like you can in addictive drums.

The Everything "EZDrummer" and "Superior Drums" thread.

So I finally decided to pick up a new EZX and have mostly changed my mind about EZDrummer. The Nashville pack really gives the program some more useful sounds and it helps that I'm now using an e-kit to trigger the samples. It's a whole new ballgame for me, now. I think I may use this a lot more...

    shure 55s

If you're looking into it because you like the looks of the mic, I'd recommend you stick with the Shure and stay away from any of the Nady or other brand mics of this style. They all seem to sound really, REALLY bad and badly suffer from problems like feedback, low frequency rumbling and bad...

FabFilter Pro-Q/Which EQ plug couldn't you live without?

...has got to be the best EQ plug around. Anybody else tried it? I'm rocking the demo and am absolutely LOVING it. This may be the first plug that I shell out some real cash for. It's the only thing I've tried that makes me feel like I can't live without it. haha. I got turned on to the company...

    LDC on Snare Drum?

I have used my Audio Technica ae3000 on snare a few times. It does a decent job with the -10 pad engaged. It's especially nice because it's tiny compared to most other LDC mics, so it's easier to position and less likely to get whacked.

Reverb - (What All Do You Use It On & How)
