The other side of building of a studio...

I totally agree with John! A lot of people these days do recordings at home simply because the equipment is getting cheaper and cheaper. But the mixing stage is REALLY hard for people to do at home because of all the outboard gear, nice monitors, acoustics, etc.... Ummmm....Yeah..... What John...

How to get that clean sound ???

Sorry CJ, I have to disagree with you on that statement. It certainly doesn't hurt to have quality pres, but that is not really where the separation starts. I've heard plenty of good tracks here and elsewhere that were done on so-so equipment and have pretty good separation (not "PRO" but...

    Nuetrik Patchbays???????????????

Belden is definitely good enough and connectors aren't too expensive ( about $1.50- $2.00 or so..) It would take a little while to solder a bunch of cables but it'll be worth it in the end! TOSS THE HOSA!!!! :D

A little bit "less" from Markertek????

Well, I gave them a call yesterday and they apoligized for the inconvenience. They'll be adding an extra foot to my next purchase of cable!!!! HAHAHA that's HILARIOUS!!!! :D

A little bit "less" from Markertek????

Yep, about a foot. I don't think it was my measuring process. Basically I took a tape measure and laid it out on the floor (extended to 26' or so). Then I got some string (no, no...not just cotton string but some sort of waxy string, almost sticky to the touch) taped it to the end and cut a...

A little bit "less" from Markertek????

Ok, here's the deal...I got 100' of Canare Star Quad for Christmas (thanks mom) and cut it into 25' foot lengths. The only problem was that 3 were 25' and one was 24'...Now of course this isn't a huge deal but I'm curious; do they plan on you putting connectors on them to make up for lost...

    school question

Do you know of any studios in your area that you could apprentice at? I've been doing it for the last 4 months at John Keane Studio and have been learning tons of stuff!!! It ends up being cheaper than going to school (and a lot more fun), but it still may not "get you in the door..." Just a...

Where can I find color-coded TRS connectors???

I checked on Markertek and Full Compass but I can't seem to find any. Do they have them and I've just overlooked them?

    recommend drum mics?

I would go with an Audio-Technica Pro 25 on kick, Sm57 on snare, the 4033 as a room mic (if you need it...), and a pair of MXL 603s as overheads. I think you would be much happier with the MXLs rather than the Behringers as your overheads (it could depend on your room though.) That would leave...

    Pro Tools.. disk allocation

I found a way to remedy this on a friends computer. If you know how long you're going to record (we'll just say 5 minutes), highlight your track with the selector up to the 5 minute mark and press record. Hopefully that will work for you.

    Best mic for kick?

I used to use a RE20 on the kick but wasn't extremely happy with the sound I was getting, so I bought a AT pro25 and I'm really diggin' it. It has much more punch than the RE20.

    mxl 603 vs. Behringer ECM8000

I would agree with Harvey, spring for the MXL 603s. I personally wasn't incredibly pleased with the ECM 8000's for overheads (could have been my room sound I suppose???) Sound wise...I think it would depend on what you are miking. When I used the ECM's for overheads they seemed a little bit...

Use the search function and type in "drum mics", I'm sure you'll find your answers.

    presonus bluetube?

Honestly, I wouldn't use it for vocals. It's a little bit too noisey. It's better suited for guitar, bass, or drums...IMHO.

    What do you suggest....

I recently invested in the Digi 001 system and I love it! I've worked with Cubase a couple of times but never really liked it (so I'm definitely no Cubase guru!!!) Pro Tools really doesn't have much of a learning curve if you're used to using DAWs but since you're not you could have a little...
