    Snare drum Trick

25-35 ms delay? For this to work, your snare and toms would have to be over 20 feet apart from each other. I doubt that's the case. It did something, and you got lucky. If you can repeat this with a different setup I'd be impressed.

    Does my band suck?

Your vocalist sounds exactly like steve aiello from Monty Are I. http://www.myspace.com/montyarei . I thought I loaded the wrong page at first. There's not a lot of creative stuff going on with the song, but it's not boring. It doesn't suck, in my opinion, but it's going to be tough to stand out...

Recording vocals and guitar louder without peaking?

 I don't remember reading that.....

I need tips for recording a 5 piece garage/punk/western band using only 6 mics.

No need to be afraid. It's very common to record bass direct. In fact, it usually sounds bigger and deeper when DI'd compared to miked.

Is this too similiar to another song?

I'd say throw it out only if that nirvana song is all you can think about when you play it. If it has any other meaning to you, then it's still your song. And Rokket is right, there isn't anything that hasn't been done before in rock music. Doesn't make some of the stuff boring, it's just not...

I need tips for recording a 5 piece garage/punk/western band using only 6 mics.

I'd have to argue that even though the line 6 may not sound great, it'll sound worse just DI'd. But you can try it and see if it works, i suppose.

First time posting in here, very limited equipment

I like it, very 80s garage punk sound to it. This could potentially have a huge sound to it. While the live sound is good, it's not always best to achieve it by actually playing live. With your current equipment, playing it all live just isn't an option. If you could get some stereo interaction...

All these mics sound the same...

There we go. The SE1 sounds like it's clipping, although I think that's actually the mic reading the transients wrong. Other than that it doesn't sound too bad. The C2 is "shrilly" and lacks low end, but that could very well be because of its placement. It picked up more string buzz which means...

All these mics sound the same...

That explains my strong distaste for Barry Gibb.... Are you using the files he just uploaded, or the ones in the original post? I'll get to listening to these new files when my roomie wakes the f*** up.

I need tips for recording a 5 piece garage/punk/western band using only 6 mics.

If you have a couple condensers, then use them as overheads on the kit, and shove at 57 in the bass drum. Snare will bleed into the overheads and sound fine. Record the bass direct to the recorder, which frees up a channel on your mixer. Shove 57s in front of the guitar amps, and then use either...

    What's your "goal" cover song?

I'm actually learning "smoke on the stairway to freebird haze" right now.

All these mics sound the same...

They're all the same file, converted to mp3 three times. Either you're testing us, or you messed something up. Play two of them, one with its polarity inverted, and all you get are mp3 glitches, meaning the file was just converted 3 times. If you could upload the aiffs, then that will make it...

    New Death Metal Mix!

Each take has a different contour, meaning that the frequencies of the distortion come in and out at different times. Layering the takes fills in some of the gaps, which make it sound "fuller". There are other things going on, but that's the main difference between doing separate takes and just...

    Stereo Vocals.....sort of?

There's no shame in doing the delay thing instead of double tracking. It's a different sound, but both are effective means of spreading an image across the stereo field. Try using a modulating delay, with a delay time of <30 ms. If the delay is causing you to hear one side more than the other...

    New Death Metal Mix!

The guitars are panned a bit too much off center. Try panning one of the left guitars 90% and the other 40% or 50%, likewise with the right. It should balance things out more. Good sound otherwise!

    Metal Mixing Standarts

Sweep a parametric EQ on stuff. Give stuff that you like a boost and stuff you don't like a cut. Study compression, make sure you know what it's doing. It can be very tricky. Outside of that, just practice. Reference a recording that you like and try to match the sound on it. Other than an...

    Unmixed, unEQued, and uncompressed clip

Bingo. If you can't get a good heavy guitar sound from a 57 you're doing something wrong. Mic placement mic placement mic placement mic placement.......etc.

    Unmixed, unEQued, and uncompressed clip

So back it off a bit, track twice, and I think you'll like the sound even more. I still think you should ditch the room mic. Fool around with mic placement a bit, that should help the most. If you can't push the volume, then you're going to have to settle for less than stellar sound, an...

just got done with an LDC shootout...

Oh damn, I called the U87 a cheap mic. The hell happened to me? I think you should also put it all into a mix, since that's what matters, most of the time. Some mics just don't sound too great by themselves, but sit perfectly with a kit, bass and guitars. Sucks no one really looked at the...

    Unmixed, unEQued, and uncompressed clip

Holy gain-to-11 batman! Back that gain knob off, a lot! Turn it down to what you think is the minimum for "your sound", then turn it down even more. There is no power in the gain knob, that's all in making the speaker move. Turn the amp up, let the tubes do their thing, get some air moving. Make...
