    What chord is this?

It can sound really thick and heavy if you add the octave: e|---| B|---| G|-5-| D|-5-| A|-3-| E|-3-|

    Local Band's Mastered Song

I think there's a tiny delay on the snare that's not working too well. Maybe that's just the way the snare is, but it sounds like there's quite a bit of comb filtering going on, maybe due to a delay, or mic bleed. The vocals just need a little bit more of something. They sound a bit too "dry"...

    Looking For a Combo Amp

If you're dead set on an amp for cleans only, then the Roland Jazz Chorus is the way to go. They're well below your price range and do the job miraculously. But maybe think about just going direct. That's about as clean as you can get, as long as you're not distorting the preamp.

    bass suggestions?

I've always dug the sound of a P-Bass special. Since it has a P in the middle and J in the bridge, you can get close to a J sound, or turn it off and have a P sound. You can get an aggressive sound like BTBAM with it. But a Standard P or J would do you good with the right amp, which I feel is...

ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE • can the digital distortion be cleaned up on this track???

Not, it won't, but since the distortion isn't very major, it might help enough. As it is, the untrained ear probably wouldn't be able to hear it, especially on computer/car speakers.

    studio sound

Studios have plenty of reflections. They're just controlled to sound pleasant, and the control rooms are altered to sound flat. A recording in a room with no reflections would sound......awkward to say the least. However, rooms with no reflections (or extraordinarily few of them) do exist...

New jazz-rock guitar tune (concert opener)

The cymbals in particular need some high end attention. I'd give the bass a bit more presence, which should give it quite a bit more of the groove that this song needs. The acoustic guitars are a little scratchy in the highs after a while, it's fatiguing. Timing issues aside (mostly in the...

    Old guy playin metal

Do you know how boring a solo would be if every note was "in the scale"? ;) Bush, ya got me head bangin! Very Iron Maiden-ish bass work/sound you got goin on there. Sounds damn good, even though I could only listen on phones because the family is sleeping.

    Paranoid about PHASE

Or you can phase align later, manually. Look at the problem tracks and you'll see that as one's voltage increases (the waveform goes up from 0), it won't match the other. Just slide one of them over so that it matches up at the start of the waveform and you'll be in better phase than you were...

    Calling on all Synth Wizards!

For a more convincing effect, you could modulate volume, and most importantly, high frequency information, which is the main dictator in distance localization.

    Virtual surround?

There are some cool things you can do with phase cancellations that can make a source sound like it's coming from behind you. I wouldn't know how to go about physically doing that, but it is pretty cool if you stumble across it (play a stereo mix in mono on your DAW, then flip the polarity of...

    Modded Valve Junior

You're a little behind yourself. Blackheart now has a tinier amp, the Killer Ant. http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM08/Content/BlackheartEngineering/PR/Killer-Ant-Guitar-Amp-.html And they have a huge 100 watt head coming our way for the people who don't know that that's too much for any...

    The bass in my voice

It's probably the proximity effect. I think it works on that song fairly well, but it does sound a little muffled. On another note, nous avons le même nom! It's odd to me because I live in connecticut.

    Recording horn section

It depends on the sound you want, the type of room it's in, what the horns are playing, etc. Good recordings have been made with both a stereo pair on horns and each one mic'd individually. It's hard to tell without more info on the situation.

How do you put theory into practice

It depends on what you're trying to do. I approach compression differently, depending on how I want it to affect the track. For example, if I just want to tame spikes, I'll start with the threshold and bring it down so that the compressor is catching those spikes, and those spikes only. Then...

    What's this for

Cardioid on both mics. Faderbug: There is such a technique. It's called the "I don't know what the hell polar patterns are so I'm going to throw the omni capsule on one to make it look like I know what I'm doing." People use it all the time. :p

    REAPER V's LOGIC

That's not bad at all. Reaper's still a better deal at $200 something for the commercial license. I still wish Reaper had its own built in editor, it's a little annoying to open audacity/wavesaur just to do a little pencil work (for example). Very minor, I know. Maybe in Reaper's future. Since...

Woo hoo! I've got a piano!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you to tune it? I have an old 1903 Mason and Hamlin upright that hasn't been tuned in about 10 years :o. It probably needs several tunings to get the strings at the right tension again, but I'd like to know what I'm in for, monetarily (is that a...
