    Mix Critique

I'm listening to "Vice" and I agree that all the good elements are here, but the mix display those elements in a better light. Although the bass is a little muddy, I think it sounds pretty cool. Sounds like a song that would have been in Scrubs or Garden State. The vox could definitely be...

    Gain in compression

The stock Studio One compressor is a real workhorse. It has low CPU usage and you can throw it on tons of tracks at the same time. It's very transparent. -It's great for general level control (like evening out a bass track) and catching transients. -It is not good for tone sculpting or mix...

    Gain in compression

This is where compressors get goofy. Technically adjusting the threshold down or bringing the input gain up will accomplish the same task. But you may find a different character to the tone with one or the other method. More likely you will only hear such a difference on analog compressors or...

    Gain in compression

I never use the input gain. You shouldn't need to if you have gain staged your tracking properly. In other words, the source that you are compressing should have been recorded at a reasonable level for tracking (usually somewhere in the -12db range). I use the makeup gain for tracks that I'm...

    Gain in compression

I use Studio One 2 Professional exclusively. There are two gains in the stock compressor: "Input gain" and "Gain". The "input gain" is just what it sounds like: extra gain on the way into the compressor. It will affect the level of compression because you're adding more signal before it hits...

"Fortunate Son" (CCR) - Retrack and new mix

Nah it's MIDI controller and a fantastic organ vst. Ya know, when you can hear it.

"Fortunate Son" (CCR) - Retrack and new mix

Yes the high pitch is an organ. Good idea to beefen it up with a full chord and bring it forward a bit. As for electrics at the end, I can try to bring them down a bit and give a little more of the global verb to blend with other instruments.

I’m struggling with my new Les Paul

I got my first Les Paul a month ago after 15 years of playing Jackson and Schecter primarily. At first it took some getting used to the fatter neck, and heavy body, the separate volume pots, the pickup select positioning, etc. But after a month with this thing, I can't f***ing put it down. I...

    Vocal Track EQ

Here's a 30 minute mix (literally). It's late and I'm tired. If it's no good, I accept no responsibility :D I was trying to keep the live feel, with the fullness of the bass that occurs in live situations (but we never hear in studio recordings anymore). Cool tune man...

    Need feedback please

This is cool overall. The cymbals are very harsh. I would back them off first, and then maybe take a bit out of the harshness range in the 3-5k. Like someone else said, the kick could have a bit more punch by taking some of the mid range boxiness out. I agree the vocals could have a touch of...

"Fortunate Son" (CCR) - Retrack and new mix

Hey everyone! Many months ago I uploaded an interpretation of "Fortunate Son" by CCR (if you haven't heard it, there's a reason I'm not calling it a cover). We had lots of great feedback and made adjustments accordingly. UPDATE 12/12...

Raw vocal eq far brighter than cd vocals--why is that?

One thing to check is mic placement during tracking: As best I understand, high frequency content ricochets off the roof of your mouth and comes out of the mouth at a downward angle. Therefore, if you place the mic slightly below your mouth, you will record a brighter sound. If you place the mic...

    Saddle heights on Tune-o-matic bridges

Hey guys! Thanks so much for your help. I had a luthier replace the bridge with the drop-in Gotoh, plus hammer down and refile a few frets that were causing dead notes (not just buzz). He also filed down the nut, and gave the whole thing a nice setup. Total cost: $100 including the bridge. This...

    Saddle heights on Tune-o-matic bridges

Thanks for the advice RFR. So here's the thing. It was ordered through Musicians Friend (I actually received it as a gift from my father). They are happy to take an exchange and all that. But everything else about this guitar is wonderful: it plays and feels fantastic. I worry that if I do an...

    Saddle heights on Tune-o-matic bridges

Hey guys, I've got a brand new Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro. It's my first guitar with a Tune-o-matic bridge. I have many guitars with Fender style and Floyd Rose, so I'm not used to the design. It appears that you cannot adjust the individual saddle heights on the Tune-o-matic. The...

    Beatles Cover.

It's definitely a raw performance, which seems like what you were going for. The mix is clean for sure, and pretty true to the era. I agree with an above poster - the snare drum is the only thing that I didn't like. But it's no big deal. Thanks for sharing man!

    Compressors and vocals question

I never use compressors on the way in. I set the gain to one level to handle the full range of dynamics. And I ride my distance from the mic while singing, which is proper live mic technique. I get in closer during quiet parts, and get further away during belts (sometimes 2 feet). If I find that...

Hey man, I was curious what you're hearing on the piano on Fortunate Son? There is a sustain pedal and it is used normally (where you would expect it on such a part. The chords sustain. I'm not sure what it is your ear is hearing as lack of sustain. Let me know, thanks! Brian

    "Fortunate Son" (CCR) interpretation

It was recorded with a sustain pedal, using an 88 key digital piano as a MIDI controller. Thanks for listening!
