Is there a tube pre that has both....

You can get a Shure inline pad to solve that problem.

So, this looks like our final studio list...

I agree that instead of getting 10 midrange mics, get a couple of top notch mics. Everything you have listed is good for the money, but with that budget, you need to bring it up a notch.

    Avalon AD2022 Preamp

    1) Yes 2) What kind of sound card are you using? Balanced is best, but the Avalon has both balanced and unbalanced outputs on the back (both are XLR's). It will depend on what your sound card takes. You can usually go balanced into unbalanced anyway though. It just negates the benefits of...

    Avalon AD2022 Preamp

Actually....I might disagree. Not really though, its just that you'll get a lot closer with the avalon and the 57 then you can with a different pre and other mics. Richard's right though, most condenser mics will smoke the 57 at acoustic. The new 414's sound nice on acoustic.

Sounds like you are going to have a great studio! My only concern about the liquid channel is that the word on it is that it does not sound nearly like a real Neve or like the high end pre's that it emulates. It's not easy to reproduce the openess and clarity of an Avalon AD2022 and thickness...

    Avalon AD2022 Preamp

Great decision. I've got an AD2022 and I love it. It was my first high end pre. You need to try a 57 through it...the Avalon will make it sound like a U47! Well, not really, but its a big difference. You will notice a difference with the AT4033 also. Some mics really shine with it though...

    Looking to make studio acces.

I think the dust covers (for mics and rack gear) are great ideas. Let me know when you have some prototypes.

What kind of stuff are you recording? I think you definitely went right with the Vipre, the Rosetta, and the AT4047, but the rest of the list looks pretty decent also. I might skip on the liquid channel and get something clean like an Avalon to complement the vipre or I might go with some...

the BricK The Tampa Safesound dmp3

In my opinion, even paying full street price for it is a pretty good deal. I'm going to be posting a review of it in the next week or two.

Doing fine with ITB for serious stuff; need help with "Quick and Dirty"

You need to get an FMR RNC for sure.

the BricK The Tampa Safesound dmp3

I've used all of the above. By far your best bet is the AT4047 and the Brick. They are in a different league than the other two. But... That being said, they're all pretty good pieces of equipment. It just depends how much you want to spend. You'll get good value either way. :)

Get a Groove Tubes Vipre! ;)

How is this mic being compared to an AT4040?

    Trumpet recording Preamp

The dmp3 is really good for the money! If you could go slightly more I'd go for a Groove Tubes Brick.
  16. Jburn34

    Most preamp for the buck.

You could get an Avalon M5, Vintech 1272 (slightly more) or a Brent Averill 312 clone. All three of those pres rock!

Not really the same thing. The 4047 has a really nice color to it, something that you can't just replicate with a VTB1. I think the optimal combination here would be an AT4047(colored) or AT4040(clean) and a RNP(cleaner) or GT Brick (more colored). By the way, those clean/color designations...

    Trumpet mic

SM57 or find a used Sennheiser md421 if you could bump up your budget about $50 or so.

Expensive Mics vs. The Mixing Process...

A U87 takes EQ a whole lot better than a Behringer B1. That's part of it. You can screw with the sound a lot more when using a quality signal chain. Frequency response is not the only issue with microphones...It's smoothness, clarity, fullness, and whatever other words you want to use to...

You can definitely try anything, but I don't think that you would benefit much in that situation. For one, the outputs of preamps are going to be line level, which will be hotter than another pre will want to accept, and the impedance will be different. Also, if you want the tone of one or...
