How do you want your bass drum to sound?

As Drummers: How do you want your bass drum to sound? I'm caught in a bit of a battle between a "producer" and band at the moment over the bass drum sounds. The producer insists on the dead impact sound ala Michael Jackson beating on a drum case (his example), that mid 80's 90's compressed puh...

Is studio time worth it in my case?

DIY! It's cheaper and the more you learn and develop your skills the better it will serve you in the future. Oh yeah, get in a band!

    Double Mic Vox Recording Technique

I usually use 2 mics but not side by side usually a dynamic mic for close up and a condenser a bit farther back and above to simulate the Motown arrangement. I started doing this to keep singers from getting to close to the condenser but often mix the 2 or use the dynamic for effects leaving...

    Cracked/Broken Acoustic Guitar

It may be okay to play but better to be safe and get it checked out. I have a lot of experience with Ovations and that can certainly stand up to abuse and damage, I know several players that regularly use instruments with similar or worse damage that still sound and play fine for many years...

Tascam DP-008 - Which External Mics are Best

I wonder if the boom is transfer thru the mic stand or from incorrect placement technique. What are you recording and how do you have the mics placed?

    Who Gets the Low End?!!

OTHER. I am able to balance the kick drums with my bass by deliberately panning things and judicious use of EQ. Careful bass drum tuning and mic placement are crucial. I am also careful not to let the lows from gtr or keys interfere with bass and drums.

    Cracked/Broken Acoustic Guitar

Bummer about your guitar but the good news is it should still be playable until and if you get it repaired. I have seen Ovations in far worse shape still in active duty for years and years.

    What mic for a VIOLA?

I have gotten really good results using a Naiant X-S mic with a universal mount attached to the tailpiece but they also offer an violin/viola specific mount. I find that is a pretty versatile mic for all sorts of things, we mainly use if for sax and clarinet...

What was your guitar/bass epiphany ?

I am mainly a bass player today, but in '76 was still a struggling but pretty decent gtr player. After hearing Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan I knew I would never get "there", understood the language but would never be able to speak it, if you will. I just quit guitar but still played...

    Tascam DP02 inputs

A mixer should end your need to constantly plug and unplug. With my DP01FX I used a 12 channel mixer and plugged everything into the mixer and the outputs of the mixer into the DP01 inputs using the XLRs. I had 2 mics, 2 stereo keyboards, stereo bass effects, stereo gtr efx, an aux stereo...

Simple stand alone multitrack digital recorder

Tascam, Zoom, Roland/Boss and Fostex all offer stand alone DAWS that should be in your price range. Guitar World AU has the Tascam DP02CF for that price, 2 input 8 track recorder that uses compact flash card for storage instead of a hard drive.

    DP-01FX USB Question

The Dp01 is not a control surface or interface it is a standalone DAW. You can transfer tracks recorded on the DP01 into ProTools either via the USB as .wav files or digital out depending on what you have available. The only control surface/interfaces that will work with PT will either be...

Need some help in improving vocal mixdown, eqing it and stuff..<sample included>

Try panning instruments and you vox around to make space for each individual. Levels and EQ sound okay. You might try compressing the vox a touch and adding some effects reverb or a gated delay.

How do you treat your fretboard?

I would only use tung oil on a fretless bass or other unfretted string instrument.

    Drum Mics-Where to begin!

Budget, size of your kit? Drum mic kits are a way to start, I am particular to the CAD mics for studio and a Shure set for live. CAD mics are not as well thought of but they really work well in my room and they are very versatile and I can find other uses for the mics for recording other...

How can i stop the SSSSS sound?

To get a good vocal sound recorded I use the classic Motown technique. a large condenser set back a foot and at a height just above the eyebrows and set a pop screen between. For some reason singers feel that to get a good recording you need the mic right up to their face, for them I will set...

How do you treat your fretboard?

When I change strings I will always wipe down the fingerboard and if it looks dry i will wipe on some bore oil (for woodwind instruments).

How can I use outboard gear on 2488MK2

There is a Stereo Bus out but no return but you can use the SUB, routing the returns thru inputs a-h and assigning them to SUB set to record. See sub-mixer section page 35 and Bounce Mix page page 58 for more detail. The down side of the 2488 is that your pre-mastered tracks are 16bit, if there...
