    OH miking

I've got a pair of GT44s that I use all the time, the newer model is private labeled for Guitar Center/ Musician's Friend: ST44 Tube Mic They sound great on overheads, along with acoustic guitars, etc. A bit more money then those CAD mics, but these are mics you'll use a lot, and keep a long...

Pictures? I have a reamp box that I built into a metal candy box for Almond Roca! (I still think metal is best for anything that might be passing audio singals, but taht 's jsut me...)

Kill a snake for independent runs?

I've had good luck with stuff from Orange County Speaker. They sell some dirt cheap XLR, etc cables, chinese, but work well IME. http://www.speakerrepair.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=genem&Product_Code=37-250x10&Category_Code=25ft-mic-cables

    DMP3 Preamp HUMMING...NO SOLUTION

Glad to hear you got it working! (I still think replacing the wall wart might have been cheaper and less possibility of problems, but if it works, go for it!)

Steel is a pain, unfortunately most of the cases I work on have an aluminum face plate, but steel for the rest of the enclosure, where the XLRs go! It is a pain, but a little oil on the bit helps (I haven't found a true cutting fluid at Harbor Freight, but motor oil works ok, just a pain to...

I do a bit of racking/building projects in rack cases and the best tools I've come across include an Autopunch, Graph paper (for lining up/laying out my panels), and my drill press. I typically layout my holes on the graph paper, then tape that to the panel, then use the auto center punch to...

    Which Reverb Pedal?

The Holy Grail is great sounding pedal, be sure to use the correct power supply, though. A client of mine had one hooked to one of those pedal boards with the power built in and it was noisy as hell. We grabbed another power supply (a 1 amp one from a drum machine) and it sounded clean as a...

How do i connect a preamp to my computer?

You could try an Apogee Duet, or such. If you want line level inputs, just get something that has those. The outputs from your fancy preamp will be line level, possibly balanced, but could be unbalanced. Most interfaces can handle either... The Sm7b requires a good bit of gain, so look for a...

first time recording.. need major help.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using an old mixer to record in stereo. It might take a little longer to get the sounds, but I've done some recordings that way that came out very well. I used to use the built in inputs on my mac with a mixer, laying down the drums, then the guitars...

first time recording.. need major help.

A quick pass on the manual suggests that the MR-7 doesn't have phantom power, and thus won't work with your condenser mics. You can go get some dynamic mics, or pick up a few phantom power supplies, like these: http://tinyurl.com/PhantomPower

    DMP3 Preamp HUMMING...NO SOLUTION

I'd be shocked if it wasn't the cause. Anything is possible, of course, but that sounds like a likely culprit. If the transformer is expecting 240volts to make 9volts, but is only getting 110, it's probably only outputting 4.5v or so. That may be enough to operate the opamps in the preamp, but...

SM58 to laptop problem, and.. preamp?

The SM58 is a dynamic mic, which mens it needs no external phantom power. The output is balanced, but your cable should be converting it to unbalanced. Is the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter mono? Does it have just the tip and sleeve, or does it have a ring also, like a headphone jack? I'm not familiar...

    DMP3 Preamp HUMMING...NO SOLUTION

Take your existing european wall wart to Radio Shack, and ask them to help you find a compatible one. You'll want 9v 1amp, based on the one in your picture. Make sure you have the right type of connector, as well. Should work fine, cost about $10-$15 or so.

Here's the page where you can find the manual, if you don't have it: http://www.peavey.com/support/searchmanuals/archived.cfm?page=M Page 7 has a good step-by-step initial set-up routine. Try that and let us know if you're getting anywhere!

    Eliminating noise / hiss

Yep, gain staging is probably your issue. Other possibilities include poor connections/bad cables, using the wrong cable (an unshielded speaker cable as an instrument cable is a common mistake) impedance mismatches (using a high impedance source like a guitar into a low impedance input, like a...

Reduce Track Volume or Reduce Master Volume?

There are two other considerations here: If you set the inpu gain of the channel to something close to the level you want it at in the mix, your fader can operate in its sweet spot, where large moves of the fader aren't making gigantic level changes. If something is to be low in the mix, you...
