Do You Want to Know a Secret?

Good tones overall, nice mix. Seems a little bright overall. Almost sounds like Beatallica.

Perspective in engineering and in these forums

Agreed, great post. This stuff is real ripe with subjectivity.

    What's Shure PG58

and I third it. PG58's are good for virtually nothing. Maybe to call out numbers in a bingo hall, but that's about it.

    Favorite DI/Modeler for recording guitar?

As far as processors, I still prefer older Boss and Korg stuff over Line 6 anything. The Korg A3 and Boss SE-70 sound better to me.

    best reverb plugin

I really like the Lexicon plug ins. Obviously the hardware sounds best, but these are great. Loaded with ye olde 'character'. I used to use Renissance stuff, but never really liked it.

    I hate reverb.

I answered yes wholeheartedly. I wouldn't say I hate it necessarily because I do use it, and when dialed well, it does really help bring things to the foreground, however, I do think it rivals compression as far as being overused. I don't think it's as integral as most would think. There's...

    Eagles Greatest Hits Volume 2

Another thing to consider is not just the analog tape itself, but every single other piece used in recordings. In 74 or whatever, no one thought they were getting 'that warm analog sound'. It was just the way things were. I think when this type of subject is brought up, people put way too...

    Eagles Greatest Hits Volume 2

Absolutely not. It simply wouldn't sound the same. All the cliche's about analog and digital exist because their true. And I completely agree about the music. Yeah, classic rock radio has killed all of that stuff, but the Eagles were fantastic. Very very well assembled songs at all times...

    Eagles Greatest Hits Volume 2

Of course it's analog. I went through a phase of really being burnt on hearing the Eagles, but I'm back to loving the stuff. Get the Long Run LP...that's my favorite.

Acid 6 rules. It now does everything I've ever wanted it to do, but didn't up to now.

    Scratching out ideas

For me it really depends. I've noticed a definate difference in how my songs come out depending on how I come up with the meat of them (usually guitars as well). Before I had a computer of any kind, it was all on the couch with a guitar and no amp and I'd just sketch stuff out. I still try to...

    i heard that

You'll hear this a thousand times in here and every word of it is the absolute truth. Don't ever get locked into thinking that there's a set thing that's gonna work for all eq needs. It just doesn't work that way. The overall range of what you need to cut or boost is not always going to be...

    Fostex powered Monitor help!

If going a small reasonable distance, the guage of your cable won't matter much. Just get cables that match your mixer's physical outputs to your powered speakers physical input. Don't spend a ton on cables, but definately don't buy any junk cables you'll have to replace.

how to level out a mix without overcompressing?

I second this. However if it is indeed a whole song per se, one way you can do the trick without overcompressing is to hit the whole thing lightly, but hit it with compression more than once. Sometimes, I'll use Waves L2 on a whole mix, but instead of mashing it once, I do it lightly a couple...

    ART TPS II Peramp

I think it's pretty fantastic for the price. The valve voicing thing is great cause it gives you room to experiment. I've found that the presets tend to work pretty good actually. One thing I tried on it that worked out great was to take out the 12AX7 tube that comes in it, and replace it...

    Compression question

Use a compressor when you feel like you need one. You know, on stuff with a lot of dynamic range. As usual, there's no set rule, but clipping sucks. Go guy an RNC. It's the best you'll get for 200 buckers.

    recording with a metronome?

Yeah, sometimes putting a click track to a band doing basic tracks can take all the fire out of the performance. I personally really dig using a click, cause when I do, I'm locked to a tempo grid in my host and editing parts are a lot easier if needed and besides that, the majority of drummers...

What could be the cause of this noise?

Sounds like any given condenser mic facing the wind. Box or no box, it's picking up the birds behind the noise just fine, so it's totally possible. Whatever you're doing, put a windscreen on it and see what happens. The only other thing I can think of is maybe you have a component somewhere...
