So many tones to pick from. But the modern hard rock/ metal tones just seems to be a mesa boogie & Pro tools combonation. The best advice is to just do what you feel and do some experiments to find a sound that is best for you. Don't try to copy the sound of today, because it will sound dated...

It's been a while since I've seen a thread similar to this, so here it goes. Mine is, Hemispheres-Rush I think this album get overlooked but this by albums like Moving Pictures, but this one of the best CD's in my opinion.

They never have anything in stock. I gave up on them. Musicianfriend has yet to let me down, but I've only bought drum stuff from them.
