If I had to choose one of the 2 I would choose the MD421 every time.

I like both alot, but I find for vocals I tend to use AT4040 the AT4040 more. The Gt55 is best with bass heavy voices and instruments. the At4040 seems to be a little warmer and smoother, probably has a better mid range response.
