    "the other Neumann"

SignalY I know exactly what he was talking about and nobody has mentioned it. Sennheiser owns Neumann, that's right. Of course you read all about Gefell and know the story. I think what your friend was talking about is BLUE Microphones.

    dual pre/comp which one?

This maybe a little more than $500 but it is a great unit exactly what you need. The Focusrite Twin Track Pro. It has 2 channels both with class A pre, EQ scoop, compressor, and variable impedence. I love this unit for the price. CHECK IT OUT!

    Poll: SM57 vs MD421

If I had to choose one of the 2 I would choose the MD421 every time.

    GT55 vs. AT4040

I like both alot, but I find for vocals I tend to use AT4040 the AT4040 more. The Gt55 is best with bass heavy voices and instruments. the At4040 seems to be a little warmer and smoother, probably has a better mid range response.

Joemeek TwinQ vs Focusrite Twin Track

Sorry bro' no experience with the JoeMeek but I do have a Focusrite Twin Track which I really like. I got it mostly for drum tracking and it does the job great on overheads. It also works well on acoustic guitar when recording in stereo with 2 mics. The compressor isn't the best nor is the...

    Presonus + ADL = ???????

I talked to Anthony DeMaria himself about this unit. He says it is awesome! I will be getting one in a month or so and will let you guys know what I think. From what he is saying this is one of those units everybody will be wanting once they hear it. I have a couple of pieces made by ADL and...

    Pro Tools. Yea or Nay?

Regardless of what anybody's opinion is Pro Tools is the industry standard in software recording PERIOD! I am a Pro Tools user only because all the files I mix are Pro Tools, all the people I record for want Pro Tools files, and it gave my studio instant credibility. As for the hardware, the...

    A "many-voice" vocal mic...

In your price range I really like the Groove Tubes GT66 tube mic. I have tried a few of these out and I own a couple. They are great sounding on female vocals and very warm on male vocals. You might need a little bit of EQ on deep voices because of the warmth. If you are looking for a...

    Vocal Mic Recommendations

I think the question was, "what is the best vocal mic you have?" Well my fav is the Brauner Phantom C. It is amazing. I have the newly voiced version and it has charactersitics like a tube mic even though it is not. The best thing about this mic is that the quality in the signal is maintained so...

    $1k Tube Pre?

Hey guys I have a Brauner Phantom C which I love but I need some tube warmth. I am now using the Focusrite ISA430 which is okay but doesn't cut it for warmth and openess. I am thinking single channel with some cool features like compressor, variable impedence, and eq. I need some suggestions...

would going from layla 24 to a digi 001 be a downgrade?

IMHO I beleieve you would be upgrading. I don't know too much about the Layla except from what I have seen at GC but I do know alot about Pro Tools and the Digi001. The Digi001 most likely has way better A/D converters and comes with the best recording software on the market in Pro Tools. If you...

    mic cables

Whoever said mic cable doesn't make a difference? I tried the new Vovox mic cable and it smokes any other cable I have tried. The scary thing is that there was a noticeable difference switching from my Blue Kiwi cable to the Vovox. I would save up a few dollars and try to get the best mic cable...

    Best Mic For Hiphop Vocals.

The Shure SM58 is a good live mic but horrible in the studio. If you are looking for a good mic at a great price check out the Rode NT1-a which costs around $200 new at G C. You will have to get 48v phantom power for this mic and I recommend a cheap mic pre amp like the Presonus Tubepre. I...

    KORG X5D is broken

There is a place here in my hometown called Antique Electronic Supply and they are one of the few parts distributors for Korg. You can call them at 480-820-5411. I had to get some parts for my Triton and they had me get in contact with Korg and tell Korg what my problem was then I called back...

    Dealing with a lousy room...

Auralex has been my life saver and it does not have to be permanent. I used some tape and a few nails to keep up my studio foam. You can get packages of 100 1'X1' pieces anywhere for really cheap, even cheaper than the crappy comforter way (no offense rshp1 I like to put a huge comforter right...

    Cleaning a microphone grill?

A good cleaner to use is called Deoxit made by Caig. I use that stuff all the time. It is great product useful for cleaning all types of electronic equipment that has become dirty. I mostly use it on my male and female XLR's, pots, and faders. I buy it from a store here in Tempe called Antique...

Focusrite ISA 428 and AKG 414...good choice?

The Focusrite ISA428 is a great pre package especially if you have a DAW and are looking to add some extra channels via lightpipe. It is the all in one pre you can record anything with. I have a similiar version but it only has one channel it's called the ISA430. I love that unit because it has...

    TLM103 Anniversary Set

I saw this package for sale that includes a Neumann TLM 103 with shockmount and carrying case for $700. I could not believe it! I have heard so many good things about this mic. If only I could know a little more about it. I have a Brauner and a bunch of other mics I use alot, but at this price...
