ehm, what is a gradient pressure microphone?

If you use two capsules back to back and a few opamps you can make a very rough approximation of a variable pattern condenser mic. Search google as people have already gone to the trouble of designing and testing this idea.

acoustic guitar micing: MXL 603's vs. SP B1

The B1 has a very wide pattern, you can pretty much plonk it anywhere in front of the guitar, it also picks up some room though. With a pair of sdcs it takes a good deal of fiddling with placement to get the sound you want but this also allows more versatility.

Which mics would give my small collection balance and versatility?

The ATM41a has even more presence boost than the 57 and can be quite harsh, I got two of them for $80 shipped from USA to Ireland even at that low price I'd think twice about getting them again.

Which mics would give my small collection balance and versatility?

    - a second AT4033 might be a choice for stereo - a large diaphragm dynamic such as the RE20 which will be great on lots of vocals, kick, bass .... - much as I hate it an sm57 for snare is an old reliable and will do lots of other jobs hehe I see snow lizard preempted me on the dynamic

    Condenser mic noise

if it happens depending on the day then it might be a moisture problem search the archives for solutions, japan can be extremely humid which could lead to condensation on the capulse. The condensation problem is exasberated by getting 'up close and personal' with the mic. [edit] here I saved...

Anyone know anything about clip on mics?

The atm35 is a great mic on brass, woodwind even snare and toms, I sold mine when I was strapped for cash last year. The prices have since gone way up on ebay :( Everything I have tried from the pro range was rubbish athough I am told the pro25 is ok. The pro 35ax seems to be deliberately...

    Microphone position question

Milk products are the most common problem, milk fat is to mucous as cement is to concrete. I have seen a lot of singers improve dramatically having given up milk and cheese or moved to fat free milk. If its hot and dry where you are in argentina make sure to keep lubricated with water. The...

    Microphone position question

Are you talking about a hiss during inhalation or exhalation? Sounds like you need to do some vocal exercises either way. Start with abdominal breathing to support the voice, work on posture and relaxation to open the airways. http://www.vocalist.org.uk/singing_exercises.html And give up...

A/B testing on pairs of mics - advice needed

You need to adjust the levels to make them equal as the human ear tends to interpret louder as better. Does your local music shop stock CAD mics, at that price I'd definitely try out the M179s.

    Sounds like the wind

Yes sounds like a capacitor problem. Some of the older russian mics had a disastrous tantalum cap in the circuit. Where did you buy it?

    Oktava Saga

Firstly thanks for taking the time to reply Löti, good post. Very few people have these mics and very many people will hold off on buying them until there is more concrete evidence as to their quality. Also judging by your own "astonishment to find out all about the Chinese production" I...
