Is there such a thing as an affordable Strat?

I'm a beginning guitarist. I look through catalogs and I see Fender Stratocasters. I look at old pictures of the Beach Boys and Buddy Holly and other greats, and I drool when I see their Strats. I want one. I look at the prices. They are a lot. I am a poor cheapskate. Should I just look...

having trouble getting that nice acoustic guitar sound

I'm no authority on the subject, but here's what I'd do: Use two mics. Small condensers might work better. Point one toward the 12th fret, slightly off-axis from a few inches away (6 is good). Point the other one somewhere along the other end of the guitar and pan the two signals opposite...

    Listening test....need listeners please!

I don't know why, but the second one sounded strangely unique to my ears...I'm probably wrong. :p Isaiah

recording as career or hobby? advise please.

For the past couple of years, I was seriously getting into recording. I thought the idea of having a career in the field sounded great. Then reality hit me in the gut. I talked the idea over with several people in the music/recording industry, and was told by every source that my decision to...

anyone heard of avlex mics are they any good?

My bad! Really? Dangit, I hate it when I'm wrong! But it's strange, I went to the avlex website and I didn't find the Superlux mic anywhere...maybe I didn't look hard enough. Isaiah

anyone heard of avlex mics are they any good?

Ahem... I believe the thread was about AVLEX mics, not Superlux...although both companies have a curious line of microphone products. Isaiah

I like to think Alan is "off-duty" when he's on the BBS...so maybe he IS a great salesman...just not here. :D Isaiah

does audio technica make good mics?

My bad! zZounds isn't selling the AT3525 for $150...8th Street Music is selling it for $150! I hate it when I do that! Isaiah

Mic Shoot-out - Clean Guitar Sound

I thought track 5 was terrible. Actually I didn't particularly like the NT2 all that much either, but I'm sure it's a terrific vocal mic. What I'd like to hear is a room mic and have the two signals panned. I have my soundcard go into my Tascam 688, and just for kicks I panned the dry MP3...

does audio technica make good mics?

I realize that monitors aren't for making things sound "good," but in my mind, "good" for my pair of consumer speakers for use as monitors means that I believe they sound well-defined, with accurate and fairly flat response, with no coloration for any particular frequencies. They are definitely...

does audio technica make good mics?

Actually my speakers strike me as amazingly flat (they're a pair of old Sony hi-fi speakers from a 1960s/70s turntable system. They beat the crap out of a lot of newer speakers I've heard.) I've noticed the honkiness mainly on my headphones. It almost seems to be more of a gain problem than...

does audio technica make good mics?

That's funny... on my voice, 2,000Hz-2,500Hz is my problem spot that I have to cut back because it's too "honky". :D Maybe I just don't have good monitoring and the mic actually sounds great without the cut in the mids. Guess I'll never know until I'm rich enough to buy some good monitors. Isaiah

does audio technica make good mics?

I have an AT3525 also. zZounds is selling it brand new for $150. I paid $174 for mine last year. It's not a bad sounding mic for the money, and it is RUGGED. Definitely well-built. Personally I don't like it on my voice - it has some sort of shrillness in the upper mids which really don't...

    Micing Upright Piano

I've heard that the 603s is a good choice for piano. A stereo pair would probably do a nice job. As for positioning them, that'd be up to you. Personally, I like to experiment, but there are some methods out there that seem to be proven to work mostly every time. Isaiah

Just some crazy idea I had....

Shalait...what if we made it worth your while? If you were to ask for a mere $5 from anyone who wanted to download the tracks, it could really be worth it, and ANYONE could afford it. Even $10 wouldn't be unreasonable. PayPal would be your gateway. I know I'D do it that way. Just my 2...

Wow... I actually wanted to comment on the guitar. I gotta get me a pair of 603s's!!! What kind of room did you record in? Isaiah
