    iBook over a Powerbook

I don't run Mac, but I won't argue with you either. I work on PC's all day, and loathe looking at the same thing when I get home. That's why Linux has been a fun experiment for me. Macs are great, I do like them very much, and I certainly don't buy the "they're too expensive" argument. And...

Software which enables multi-track recording without midis

Though Tracktion does midi, Rewire, and VSTi's, it also does multitracking quite well. Adobe Audition is excellent, and if you're a student (or know one) you can get it for $140. It's pretty much just a multitracker, nice and solid. *saves Manning the trouble of clicking reply* Search under...

    Need a computer for recording

It's curious that you say all this, because being in IT for awhile now, Dell is the worst when it comes to support for servers, and HP is by far the best. IBM laptops are awesome, and their support is without equal. Stuff is there next day for both HP and IBM, and their policies for warranties...

    Need a computer for recording

Dells, IMO, are mass-produced crap, that are often proprietary. Waste of money. Besides, that $550 computer can clean the clock of the cheap Dell. It's not a fair comparison. The "recommended" computer for $540 is a Celeron 2.4Ghz, with onboard video, a 40gig HD, and a DVD-ROM (not writeable)...

buying XP Home full version oem

Planet CCRMA is by far the best audio solution for Linux I've seen. Fedora Core 1 is basically Red Hat 10 (the name change happened 2 months before FC1's release; the only changes were logos and such) and it will be even sweeter when Fransisco (I think that's the guy's name) gets the FC2 bugs...

    US-122 and powertracks

Software synths in real-time? How else would you be running them?

buying XP Home full version oem

I am on Linux now, for DAW and everything else. Goodbye Windows. I run Fedora Core 1 for DAW (since it is supported by CCRMA) and Fedora Core 3 on my laptop for web stuff, Photoshop, and Office.

    iBook over a Powerbook

That was two years ago dude. It now has 256MB built-in.

    iBook over a Powerbook

recording live 8-10 tracks, any G4 iBook is definitely enough.

buying XP Home full version oem

Yes, you can. Just not at the same time. The full version can be installed on different computers, i.e. you buy a new computer, you can use the full version on the new computer. Not the case with OEM, which can only be used on one computer (as many times as you want to reinstall on that...

    iBook over a Powerbook

First of all, if you waited for the next greatest thing to come out, you'll be waiting forever. Because when the dual-core's come out, there'll be something else out there announced that'll make you want to wait. The question is, what are you doing with it? If the iBook does what you need...

    recommended PC specifications

Looks like a good deal; kinda overkill, I think. The WinXP not being good for recording is BS, whoever told you that's an ignorant moron.

    Mac or PC?

It'd be nice if the interface companies pitched in a bit, and wrote their own drivers for Linux. I'm surprised an interface maker and DAW app maker haven't teamed up and done a Linux distro based around their products..... a total solution. That would be cool.

    Mac or PC?

what drivers are you looking for? I had no problem finding drivers for Tascam, Echo, M-Audio, RME, etc. The software's crazy. They have so much stuff available, all for free. It's not for everyone (yet) but it's coming along.

    Mac or PC?

If your pc takes 5-10 minutes to fully boot, then you're obviously too incompetent to run any computer, Mac, Linux, Windows, or whatever. I know this is a response to a two month old post, but I found it too hilarious not to comment.

mobo for Athlon 64 chipset 939??

RAID 0 is good for disk transfer speed, but cuts reliability in half; i.e. you lose one drive, you lose the information on both drives.

    What's wrong with USB?

USB can be very finicky. That being said, I've had luck with the Tascam 122, working on KT333, KM400, KT600 Via chipsets, as well as an Intel 830M chipset. However I have not tried M-Audio's stuff, and have heard many issues with some of them. Also, when M-Audio's now offering firewire devices...

mobo for Athlon 64 chipset 939??

I've always built machines using Asus stuff, and haven't been burnt yet. They have good driver support, and run nice and stable. Also, they generally don't have chipset fans, like the MSI's sometimes do (as was mentioned). Even though they're a bit more than other brands, I ain't gonna fix it...

    I tried traktion...bah !

It is you who is being impolite, disrespecting everyone's choice to use what they wish to use, and instead plastering every thread with infomercials. Start contributing something other than being a computer engineer for eons using Power Tracks, and maybe someone will take you seriously...

See, that's the point. We DON'T WANT TO DEBATE with you. We're just tired of hearing about it.
