    Computers: Dell Or Hp ????

Go to Monarch Computer, and they will build a system identical to Alienware minus the gaudy case for a lot less, and provide better support. Alienware is ridiculously overpriced, and there's no need for it. Their notebooks are made in China, like everyone else's.

what do you think about minimac for real-time audio apps like ableton?

There's a guy over at OSXaudio.com using the Mini to run a live rig consisting of a couple softsynths, Logic, and Native Instruments' Guitar Rig. He's using it with a 7" LCD touch screen, and he loves it. Very cool little set up. Because a Mac laptop costs $999, not $499.

L2 cache size on processor, does it matter for DAW?

An interesting example is that my Gateway 1.33Ghz Celeron laptop, with 256KB L2, kicks the crap out of my dad's 1.8Ghz 256KB L2 Pentium 4. It's just because the P4 has a longer pipeline, and even though the clock on the Celeron is lower, it's more efficient since it's based on a PIII. It's a...

    Arguments for Mac over PC

I'm still wondering how anyone can spend hours troubleshooting a print driver. I can reload Windows XP from scratch in under an hour. Follow the instructions for the drivers, and bang! You're printing. Even Linux takes me only a few minutes getting it printing. And that's with sharing it to...

just polled the trigger on Reason 3

I couldn't possibly live without Reason. It's made so much of a difference with everything I do, and it sounds great. I use it with Tracktion 1.6, which of course sucks balls compared to Power Tracks (hahahaha) and it gets the job done. FYI, if you're a student, you can get the ReFills for...

    Reason 2.5 retail?

Just an FYI.... AcademicSuperstore.com now allows you to order (if you're a student) Reason 3 for $199. Previously only a school was allowed to get the discounted rate, if they bought bulk, like 10 or more or something. But I think now that Line 6 is the distributor, that's changed. So...

    Best laptop for Recording...Anyone?

I think the only way to go for Windows PCs are either a Toshiba or IBM, with a Pentium M. I can't believe people are using desktop processor-equipt laptops. Are you guys trying to become infertile? :D

    Computers: Dell Or Hp ????

Making a blanket statement that all Compaq/HP's suck is ignorant. Their business class stuff (desktops, notebooks, and servers) all run very well, in not so good conditions. Dell, on the other hand, has screwed us on more than one occasion. I guess it's personal experience. Of the 1000 PC's we...

    Dual core and dual processingmachines

Sonar also takes advantage of dual processors. And it is worth the investment; considering the massive push to dual core by AMD and Intel, everyone will begin making their apps dual processor capable. Unless they choose not to evolve with the technology.

    Arguments for Mac over PC

iBooks aren't expensive at all. $999 seems pretty reasonable for a laptop.

    XP Pro VS. XP Home

For the miniscule price difference, I always go Pro. With the new dualcore's coming out, it will require Pro anyway. Plus, using wireless and a laptop, you can run an XLR cable into the next room, and use the laptop to remotely control your DAW without the fan hum, if that's an issue. Kinda...

    Which mac?

An iBook's a great choice because you can get a small 12" for portability, but then have the option of hooking up a big ass monitor for home use. It's a Mac Mini w/ a screen!

Thinking of adding Reason 3.0 to setup - opinions needed

I have Reason 2.5, and I couldn't live without it. I am a rock guy too, and the bass sounds, piano, and drums are just awesome. I love it. If you're a guitar player, get yourself a Graphtech Ghost system and the Roland GI20.....play Reason from the guitar! Totally cool. I use Reason with...

    Cheap Home Recording Computer

Here's what I came up with. It's a little more than a doorbuster Dell, but you're not going to get a DL DVD-R/W, 1gig of RAM, and 2 hard drives from them, for $400. Plus, the following machine has separate AGP, not the shared crap that the Dell has. Antec 2600AMB $64.50 Asus A7V880 $67.50...

    Apple G4 450mhz

I'd get the tower and then an accelerator card, and you'll be fine.

    ASIO Cardbus? Soft Synths only!!

I want to use my laptop for editing tracks and playing soft synths and samplers (Reason) but not really use it for tracking live instruments (I've got a desktop for that). Has anyone tried the Audigy cardbus? I know, Creative generally sucks, but I don't care about its recording abilities (or...

    Selling freeware on ebay?

I e-mailed him: He might have added some little mundane crap to it, since it's open source. But come on. I think that's stupid. At least he's only charging 7.50 pounds for it. I have heard of other people "selling" Fedora Core disks, with the intention of selling their services more than the...

Is cool edit the easiest to use?

Audition 1.5 does ReWire, and it's pretty much just an improved CEP.

Anyone have anything to say about Tracktion?

I like it a lot. I got the free version they were giving out a couple months ago, and it's working well for me, since I use VST plug-ins and ReWire. I'll probably upgrade to T2, after it's been out for awhile.
