Do you really buy that expensive recording software?

I finally got this to work last week on a laptop. I am working on piecing together a Linux-only machine, for experimentation with audio. I will probably use Fedora Core 1. I hate to do that, since I am running FC3 as my "surfing" partition, and I like it so much better from an appearance...

    I tried traktion...bah !

The problem here isn't that you don't like Tracktion, or we don't care to try or use Power Tracks. It's that we don't want to be converted, nor do we care if we convert someone else to something we use. We could give two shits if you use Tracktion, Audition, Cubase, Sonar, etc. It doesn't hurt...

Seems like Aardvark's totally gone now!

Whoa that's messed up. I guess that's why they've not come out with anything in ages, whereas Echo and M-Audio continue to roll out new stuff.

    Delta 1010: AMD or Pentium

Layla (and any Echo hardware) works without issue on Via chipsets, all the way back to KT133's.

    I tried traktion...bah !

Oh wow, Manning didn't like [insert software other than PowerTracks here]. What a surprise. I am glad you gave it a few days to try it out, and gave an "unbiased" review.

    Garageband on Emacs

GarageBand will allow you to select the Audiophile as the recording source, and therefore anything plugged into it. As for recording 5 tracks at once; first of all, the Audiophile is a 2 track device. You can submix 5 tracks at the mixer, but you to still have to record 2 tracks. Second of...

Older Echo Layla24 vs Newer Layla3G

I'd love the Layla 3G. The two pre's would take care of all my pre needs, and then the rest I can hook all of my other crap to.

Can anyone recommend a soundcard that won't break the bank??

No RCA's. Use balanced TRS cables for best results.

    Tracktion tryout

A sticky thread!! That's a good idea. Actually a sticky buyer's guide. And we'd list Power Tracks like this: DAW Software under $100 -- Tracktion -- $80 (or free, before 12/31/04) Cakewalk Home Studio -- $90 Power Tracks -- $49* * Manning's favorite.

Can anyone recommend a soundcard that won't break the bank??

The Echo Mia, with its balance 1/4" inputs, is a good value. I've had mine for quite awhile now, and really enjoy it.

    Tracktion tryout

Why, because he states that many of us lack education/understanding, but then spells "useful" incorrectly?

    Tracktion tryout

Well, that was borderline insulting. So much for the season of goodwill, eh? There are plenty of educated people here, that know a lot about computers, recording, and software. No need to be condescending. Just because we choose not to use PT, and get tired of hearing about the informercials...

    Tracktion tryout

And I am sure they're every bit as unbiased as you, right? :D

    Tracktion tryout

Yes, we get it, you like Power Tracks.

Guitarist Looking for the right Laptop PC (or Mac??)

The Acer Ferrari is over-priced. an HP or an eMachines would be a better choice. The Acer comes with a 4200rpm drive, which is unacceptable in that price range. Tearing out the drive right when you buy the laptop is ridiculous.

The New Apple iMac G5 as a DAW???

No it's not because you're new. I have no idea why.

The New Apple iMac G5 as a DAW???

Some people just don't like Windows, myself included. I really like my Athlon set up, but I am just tired of dealing with Windows crap. I do it day in, day out at work, and I get tired of looking at it. Linux is a neat alternative, in theory. But I still have gotten proper drivers for my audio...

    celeron vs. pentium vs amd

Well, don't get the wrong impression. For the money, the Atlhon stuff is still better.

    athlon 64 4000 and p4 EE article.

I am more interested in the tests being run by the folks over at the Digi board, and other audio sites. Toms is great, but not entirely accurate for a mulitrack audio + synth standpoint.
