    Classical guitar

Thank you. Just to clarify there is no compression being applied here and I'm only using one mic (nt1a) 10" from 12th fret. With regards to your comment about nails acting as picks, this was what I was trying to get at in my previous post. My nails are just not thick enough compared to CG...

    Classical guitar

I decided to go for a distance of around 8-10inches from the guitar, using the nt1a pointed at the 12th fret (slightly pointing dowward) I added some convulsion reverb (rooms for music - altiverb) and high passed the low end. I have stuck a limiter on the master to bring up overall level. This...

    Classical guitar

Is 6" too close for a classical guitar I.e too boomy? I assume it's fine to add more gain at the DAW doe more signal then?

Wouldn't adding gain at the DAW essentially increase noise/room ambience? Many thanks

    Classical guitar

Should I use a large diaphragm or directional condenser? The recording will essentially consist of vocal, guitar, bass (all tracked separately) - modern folky kind stuff I have tried various distances but can't seem to get enough signal so always opt for closer positions (6") I can achieve...

    Simple gain staging question

In the manual for my firestudio project it states to "set the input level near its maximum without clipping" This would equate anywhere from -6db to -0db going if we are going by the reading on the little led meter the interface. This makes no sense when it comes to the common practice of...

    Stereo micing question

I only have two mics at my disposal. A rode nt1 (large diaphragm) and a rode m3 (small) Is it still possible to capture a full tonal picture of the acoustic guitar using a standard stereo mix technique in this way (bridge panned hard left and neck panned hard right) using different types of...

    Reflection filters on instruments

Does anyone use them for recording other sources apart from vocals? I've been using one on guitar/ukulele and the recordings sound a little too clean if anything .. I record in my basement with a fair amount of room treatment.

    Tracking without click

Cool, this has helped me get a better picture of how to approach certain tracks/material. The main rhythmic stuff in my music is just guitar and bass, so I'll probably record both live with the bass DI'ied, we can the scrap bass if mistakes are made. I can then mime the vocal throughout takes. ;)

    Tracking without click

Would you then keep these main instruments that were recorded together. Or would you then aim to track everything separately over the top of this 'scratch track' if the latter then wouldn't it be extremely tricky to match the timing of playing for each instrument? Thanks

    Tracking without click

I play mostly acoustic/folk/fingerstyle stuff with very little in the way of drums or percussion. I listen to a lot of similar stuff that sounds as if it's been recorded without a click (bon iver, bright eyes, Tom waits) my question is how would is this style of music tracked. Would it...

    Using compressor/adjusting track level

I'm putting it on the insert. This makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for the replies :)

    Using compressor/adjusting track level

But if I push the fader up after getting my preferred compressor settings doesn't this effectively pump more signal to the compressor, thus creating more compression and gain reduction?

    Using compressor/adjusting track level

Ok, So I set my faders to get a decent sounding mix. I then add a compressor to say the acoustic guitar with roughly 3db of gain reduction. Do I then use the output on the compressor to adjust overall track level, or, do I use the regular fader on the mixer? If it's the former couldn't i...

Electric guitar causing problems at mastering

I haven't tried turning down the trim yet. My waves peaks at -10db - -8db, so no they are not 'block' like

Electric guitar causing problems at mastering

I've done some further tests. 1. soloed a drum sample (ez drummer) and pushed the limiter up, no audible distortion, although the sound does become fatigued and clearly squished. 2.soloed all microphone (separately) recordings and pushed limiter up, I can only raise it so far without causing...

Electric guitar causing problems at mastering

I've narrowed down the issue further. Basically I'm starting to think this is a build up of peaks during the guitar part and not exactly the part itself. The ukulele shows more transients/dynamic range than the guitar part during the guitar part, so maybe I should compress the ukulele instead...

Electric guitar causing problems at mastering

Ok. Thank you for all your input. Is it safe to assume that - providing the clipping sound isn't caused from tracking - it's caused by the guitar track peaking too high within the limiter, essentially causing unwanted distortion. And that more compression/e.q can fix this at the mixing stage

Electric guitar causing problems at mastering

It sounded fine at normal monitoring levels. And yes, I did apply some compression to the guitar track, maybe it needs more? I might also listen to the mix at higher monitoring levels to check again for and signs of detrimental sound annomilies. Could the amps reverb be to blame for spikey...

Electric guitar causing problems at mastering

Hello all, I recently recorded a song with a finger picked, clean/slightly overdriven guitar sound (recorded in with some reverb on the amp, and a touch of delay from a pedal) The rest of my track is basically ukulele, some sampled ez drums and vocals. Now, at the mixing stage everything...
