My only outboard gear is my presonus firestudio project interface so rely solely on daw fader readings

so, during recording should I use a VU meter on the insert of each track, set that to -18dbfs nominal level and shoot for an average of 0VU? or scrap that and just shoot for an average of -18dbfs on my DAW meters (forgetting about absolute peaks)

because VU is an average level? and this is what we're more concerned with I guess...? Farview?
