My Daughter's singing - Silent Moon

https://soundcloud.com/juliannapaul/silent-moon Here is a song we just finished. Julianna is 13 and starting to mature. What do you think of her voice and performance? This is a song I wrote for myself but once Julianna started to sing it it quickly became her song. I think her voice sits...

    An acoustic instrumental

I tried using Elixer coated strings and rubbing my fingers on the side if my nose (gets them a little oily) but the it's hard to reduce the squeak because I slide my fingers down the neck in the Verse part. I am going to try editing the individual tracks and reduce the volume of the squeak...

    An acoustic instrumental

This was kind of inspired by Yes...although a friend said it reminded him of Joni Mitchell meets Styx...a strange marriage that would be. Both the main acoustic, a J-45, and the leads, a 000-18, were miced with a Beyer M-160 ribbon mic. Someone on RAP (remembet usenet?) recommended that I try...

    Ribbon Mic shoot out.

The ribbons really sound very similar to each other on my PC speakers. A/Bing with the SM-57 really shows how ribbons smooth out the top end. I liked the ribbons for that song. I have the Beyer myself.

How many of you use pitch correction for your own vocals?

I never use it on the main vocal. I will sometimes double track harmonies and use it on only one of the tracks....having one take in really tight pitch makes the whole thing sound better. Having the tracks treated differently makes it sound fuller. I do not have really good pitch.

    Need Feedback..new young singer

We redid the song a half key lower and we retracked Julie's vocal with a KM-184 which brightens it up a bit. We also tracked her harmonies which she sings very naturally. This is where it is now.... I might invest in some real drums. I'm not sure how far I'm going to take this song Julie is...

    Need Feedback..new young singer

This is a song that my daughter sings. She is 13. I am too close to her and the song to be objective. I'd appreciate your comments and opinions on her singing... The recording itself is a demo. https://soundcloud.com/tom-paul-2/girl-in-the-tower

A song about losing a friend

I wrote a song about losing by cousin and best friend recently. A couple of musicians helped me with this. John Marsden played Piano and B-3. I love how open the mix feels..not a bunch of guitars clogging up the mids like a lot of my tunes. The acoustic is a '65 J-200 and it has a very dark...

Do you consciously try to make your lyrics rhyme ?

Yes, almost always. I use online rhyming dictionaries a lot when I am stuck.... sometimes a near rhyme is as close as you can get...like sheet and beach....both have the long E.

A song about hope in the face or darkness.

So here is a song I wrote after suicide tore through my life this year...2 friends and Robin Williams. How do you get to such a hopeless dark place and how do you get out of it? It leaves us survivors wishing we had been better friends, had seen the signs, had invited them over,...... I was...

    Recording vocals and acoustic guitar

What is the best way to record vocals and acoustic guitar? Should I record it separately? I like to record them separately so that I have more control when mixing. I just haven't been happy when I track them together. However, some people play and sing together better than tracking things...

    Piano song + vocal..

I really doubt that. If you sound like crap now, you will sound like crap with slightly better detail with a better recording chain. Did you record a separate vocal track or did you do it all with one mic? Turn up the vocal track? Thin I can't help you with.. again, you can make marginal...

This article in The Atlantic is a Songwriting Masterclass from Wilco's Jeff Tweedy

I write and record the rhythm parts first....that is the "fun" part. Lyrics are the "work" part of the song for me. I used to try to write songs for Nashville or pop markets where we are told that lyrics are more important than the music. After giving that up, I started listening to the...

Steinberg UR22 Audio Interface - Would You Recommend It?

" I'm glad to hear that. I am interested in getting a UR22 but have read that the preamps are pretty bad. " I use a UR-44 with Great River Pres that I route into the line-in ports. I use the UR-44 pres if I need extras. Otherwise, it is a AD- DA converter with some extra IO. Works just fine...

A song from 2001 with Charlie DeChant of Hall and Oates

This is a song I wrote in 2001 that features Charlie DeChant of Hall and Oates who played in the 2014 R&R Hall of Fame Concert this year!! What a strange life that would put him on my humble indie record. John Marsden plays Piano and brought Charlie into the picture. I did not have to pay him...

    Too Many Guitars??

Steve Howe was interviewed in Vintage guitar... he had 130 guitars. My wife is OK with my 9 guitars.... I don't buy many these days. I am down a couple from my peak. I did just get a classical guitar which is a fun addition to my steel string acoustics...3..000-18, J-200 and J-45.

Best Amp Option for small apartment

I have a 4w Vox AC4 that I love. The 1 Watt power setting is still loud enough to make your neighbors hate you. Stick it in a closet that has a lot of clothes in it and you might have a nice recording solution.
