It occurs to me that we are in the midst of two generations of home recorders - those who remember records and those for whom records are a quaint historical legend. So maybe the obvious needs to be stated, as it is no longer obvious to many. It might even have entered the realm of the exotic...
Who's using these units? I have a DPS16 that gets used all the time (along with my ASUS PC setup) and am thinking of picking up an older DPS24. I have yet to see a dedicated unit that even approaches these for quality, design and sound. Nobody is making this stuff at all, unless you get into the...
Wicked tree!
Nice studio room too, by the way... I'm moving mine from one poorly-utilized room to another poorly-utilized room, but will take some new pics and post 'em.
Muzzaman is right. You have to use the "freeze" function that will process the effects on that one channel prior to playback so the program doesn't keep using your computer resources. I run into it when layering compression and so forth. Sounds like hell until you freeze and then it's pretty sweet.
I have a BBE MaxCom which is an optical compresser with a maximizer option built in. $200 new and has two channels. It's a great live mix compresser. Occasionally I have used the maximizer thingie for live sound, but a little goes a long way. It's like an aggressive preset EQ. I have had good...
That's also and easy fix. Ff you are loading individual tracks with effects, particularly processing effects, freeze the effects on each track prior to playing back the mix All it does is process each track separately and then combines the previously processed tracks. Freezing has its own undo...
Subtractive EQ
After all the techie talk and dust dies down, I think there really is a rule of thumb and perhaps only one: Adjust EQ by subtraction if at all possible.
If you've done much work with this stuff the idea is obvious. If you're starting it is anything but obvious. But when you add...
I agree with the neck micing technique. Above all stay away from the soundhole as both the low end frequencies and the air movement will overwhelm a large diaphragm condenser. There should be a sweet spot for this or any other instrument with the mic you have. The trick is to shelve any...
Hey - Remembered my password....
I'm tempted to put a 10" speaker in the Trace; I think there is just room enough (barely). It's such a sweet sounding amp as long as the gain isn't up very much.
Hi rice - It's been a while since I was on this site and found your message. I still have the Michael hedges transcription and will dig it out for you.
For a computer interface, try to land an i version of the new Mackie unit with the firewire card. That way you can send signal into the computer and back out to mix with the Mackie. Otherwise you really don't have an interface, especially if the firewire card "doesn't work"; you'd be depending...
Just a hunch - you could have some corrosion going on. Pull the card out and physically reinstall it. If the slot next to the card is free, try reinstalling it there and see if the problem goes away.
Well I expect Lexicon worked out the circuitry with a 4-input unit, then repackaged as an entry level 2-input unit. It won't have converters like an Apogee, but hey - Lexicon is a decent marque and the thing isn't costing a grand. I have a buddy up here who is using one like this and loves it...
I kinda agree here... you'll have a hard time finding a laptop to match your old Aardvark interface.
Here are a few ideas... especially if you have a cardbus on the laptop; it's way faster than USB.

I use a dedicated multitrack unit for recording in the field, where most of my work is done. I then import the files to my DAW in my small project studio, where I have more tools to do post production work on them.
One difficulty with computerized DAWs, at least PCs, is their tendency to...
