    Tascam 234 Syncaset

... Work all the buttons, knobs & switches really well. After that you might consider opening it up and reseating all the connectors. :spank::eek:;)

Best sound from a cassette portastudio?

I'm pretty sure... it was a Pro Co Road Kill distortion pedal (mixed with ambient mic on the body of the guitar). The Road Kill has Gain/Level/Tone controls. I'll typically put a close-mic on the body of the electric guitar/bass for natural ambience when I record DI & mix to taste. (Tip of the...

Best sound from a cassette portastudio?

This one... Has good fidelity from a Tascam 424mkIII. It's So Hard

Best sound from a cassette portastudio?

I think... This one has exceedingly good fidelity from a Tascam 246 Portastudio. Remember :spank::eek:;)

Best sound from a cassette portastudio?

Likewise,... I think this one has good fidelity from a Tascam 488mkII Portastudio cassette 8-track. How Do You Sleep? :spank::eek:;)

Best sound from a cassette portastudio?

Sounds interesting. Can't wait to hear it! I might be able to sift through some 244 recordings to find one with optimal sound quality. TBD. I agree it's a fine sounding recorder. :spank::eek:;)

    Tascam 244 preamp

Hi,... I've never used an external preamp with the 244, as I've never needed to. The 244's preamps always seemed to have more than enough gain for my cheapie MOR mics. You may use an external preamp & plug it into the normal Mic/Line (1/4") inputs, using the transformer/adapter as necessary &...

Best sound from a cassette portastudio?

Thanks! ;) I mixed 28 Ramones covers to mono in a 2 month long session. An entire album's worth of material. All 4-track on the 424mkII except one song on the 388. (All featured on Soundclick). Some of them I accidentally recorded in Normal speed & they're decidedly Lofi. There's a tangible...

Tascam Porta One - motor is always running

In general,... One microswitch is usually for the "cassette in place" signal that starts the motor spinning, & the other microswitch is usually the "write enable/protect" sensor (senses the little punch-out tabs). It could be that the 'cassette in place' microswitch is maladjusted to be always...

Best sound from a cassette portastudio?

I think this one rates. Commando Recorded in 2001 on the Tascam 424mkII with an SM57 & mixed to Mono using the Cue buss, i.e., using the onboard EQ during recording and no EQ on mixdown. What you hear is the raw off-tape signal. Enjoy! :spank::eek:;)

    New Toy!

Yeah,... a half-track, double-speed mastering cassette that also dubs L & R independently. A niche format (that never was). Would have been sweet! If that had existed I'd have bought one. Let us know if your mod is successful. The 124AV is already a niche format that's not compatible with...

    New Toy!

... Love it! You really scored! I often wished the 124AV had a double speed option. That's the one that is half-track and can record tracks 1 & 2 independently. Half-track, independent 1-2 dubbing and double speed would have been a keen combo, but... ;) I'd been looking at the 122 line of...

Tascam 244: first try, weird phasing sound/problem

... I believe so, but you'll want to source new belts, tires & pinchwheel. Welcome to the world of analog!

Tascam 244: first try, weird phasing sound/problem

Yes: Bad Rubber. From what you've described, it seems that the rubber components have likely gone bad. There's a "control" belt that moves the heads up/down. When this goes bad, the heads often get stuck in the up position, leaving the tape stuck in the mechanism. Usually pretty easy to...

    RMGI tape

... Is that 0VU @ +6dB? (or the tried & true 0VU=+3dB allowing for +3VU=+6dB peaks?) What dB over-bias did you use for ATR? Do you think a 38 would support the same adjustment targets? Thank you. :spank::eek:;)

    Maybe time for big changes

... My experience is the rackmount stuff sells fast, then mid sized vintage mixers, r/r recorders and lastly any porta-format recording gear. Admittedly, that's anecdotal & I'm not entirely through the process. I have trouble letting go. There's inertia & emotional attachment, but one has to...

    Tascam Portastudios sound/pre amp differences

The other ideas summarized:... EQ: I think the 244/246 has the better 2-band sweepable EQ vs. the 424mk's 3-band/2-fixed/mid-sweepable EQ. A 2-band sweepable EQ enables you to dial in on the sweet spot(s) of different instruments better, vs. the tendency of 2 fixed bands beyond a certain point...

Four Track Cassette Recording: Problem with Cross Talk Between Tracks.

Turn the knobs. I think it's best to concentrate the L/R stereo (main) buss signal & mix that goes directly to tape and getting that right on the buss first then in the phones, and then bring up the cue section last, only enough to give you a guide to the changes. You have ultimate control of...
