    Wharfedale Diamond Pro Monitors

Dude, have you gotten them yet (the wharfedales)? Let us know your initial impressions.

    Oktava, Mk012 for drum overheads

You'll be fine buying one now and possibly another later. Matched pairs are nice, but like it's been said they aren't all that neccisary unless you're really trying to be profesional. A good drum recording is going to be good regardless of whether the overheads are matched pairs. Also, mono...

can't believe I never tried this!

Well, I think there are more reasons to record in stereo than just phase. If you place mics in different positions you'll get different sounds, if the phase sounds bad, then fix it. If you're just using an XY or something, then you probably won't get much phase problems in the first place.

can't believe I never tried this!

If you're using sonar, you could just fix the phase problems by moving one of the waveforms so that it lines up perfectly to the other.

I've got a mastering internship coming up and need suggestions...

Tell us more about this seperate tracks for different frequency ranges. I've never heard of that. I got a chance to visit Masterphonics in Nashville and it was awesome, they have two mastering rooms that are enormous, with speakers that are an entire side of the wall. My advice would be to...

Mixing and Producing that professional sound

Hey man, I think the advice was more along the lines of, 'to play golf you need to practice and take lessons from a pro.' It's very true, you need to put in the time. Panning this and adding that frequency aren't going to help unless you really know what you're doing. But I agree, getting...

    What is anechoic room simulation?

Yeah, my school had a chamber like that, I can't remember why, I believe it had something to do with 'special education" students, but I can't really see why. I should try to get in that thing sometime.

How many guitar tracks are too many?

The dude from a band called revis went to my school and claimed that there were about a hundred tracks on most songs off their new album, mostly guitars, but I haven't heard it and the song on the radio blew. I believe that he was saying that they just layered the same parts over and over.

Know of any good 4-track(cassette) albums out there?

I believe that a band called Guided by Voices actually may have recorded a 'critically acclaimed' album, on a cassette 4-track, or so I have read, but don't actually know much about it. I think it could be done with pretty good success if you had some good mics and maybe a good pre-amp, that...

Samson C03 (I need to know, cuz I don't know how long, I can hold on)

I have two samson C01's, super cheap and have done me well on vocals, acoustics, drum overheads, and some electric guitar, as well as various other stuff. I think they actually sound pretty good, but yes they do have a decent amount of noise, hasn't been too much of a problem for me though...

    Favorite Snare Mic

I really like the AT ATM25, which is usually used for bass or kick purposes, but it gives me a really good, full snare sound. Also, keep in mind that your overheads have a lot to do with how your snare will turn out in the mix.

    Hidden Tricks

I was recording an acoustic on a hot day with the windows open and now there is the faint sound of an ice cream man driving by in the tune.

any suggestions on tracking or mixing? HELP!!

If you're recording into a DAW, I would recomend not using compression during tracking and tweaking it with plugins after it's been recorded. I feel that this might give you more control especially if you are not very exerienced with compression. I've always been a proponent of tracking dry and...

    Do I need a mic preamp/DI box?

Balanced is different from stereo, it probably won't be a huge deal whether you're running balanced or unbalanced from your mixer to the soundcard unless it's a long run. You should be able to do stereo into the soundcard, just make sure whatever you're recording into (the program) is set to...

Samson Resolv 80a vs maudio bx8s... please help !!

You probably won't go wrong with either, you generally get what you pay for and I'm sure they both have their strengths and weaknesses. But one thing to keep in mind is that just because monitors sound bad to some people doesn't mean they are bad, you want monitors to be accurate, which...

    Any good free anti-virus software?

Has anyone ever tried any free anti-virus software thats any good? According to McAfee I have a virus, but it won't clean it, and I'm skeptical about deleting it.

    Mixing 5 guitars!

Hey man, definately record the guitar tracks in mono, unless your using stereo effects or two mics. Even so, recording to two tracks (L and R) gives you more control. Definately try automation like that other guy mentioned. Turn down the stuff that isn't taking precident on that section. The...

    Free "Mixing" and/or "Mastering"

Sure, I use a PC with Wavelab mostly for my mastering, but also use N-track for some tracking, mixing, and editing every once in a while. I use Waves mostly for mastering, with some PSP software that I recently got as well, I use other software too, but I'm not gonna list it all. Mackie HR824...

    Free "Mixing" and/or "Mastering"

I've been home "mastering" stuff for a few months now with pretty decent results and am looking to gain some more experience. If anyone is interested I would like to work with their material for free and get some feedback. I have decent equipment (software actually) and a good room with good...

    First kit...advice

Stage Customs are great drums, just make sure you get everything you need to set up and play. The YD and Rydeen are pretty good too if you know someone who knows how to tune them. Pretty much, as far as the big name drums go, you get what you pay for, most entry level kits can sound fine with...
