How about trying to cut rather than boost with the EQ... Get a freq all the way UP, put the Q of it to a narrow one and move it around as you playback the recorded GTR. Find the frequencies that bother you or that you find "unpretty" and then cut those out a bit...

Remove the heads and place the mics inside... lately I've recorded kick removing the front head and micing with a Neumann U47 or a Shure KSM 32 and really love the results. Good luck
