Getting Good Tight Bass guitar sounds?

I hate to state the obvious, but a good bass sounds starts with a really good bass and a really good player. From there, I'd agree with some of the others that a mixture of DI signal and a mic is a great way to go. A decent tube bass head (Ampeg or even a Fender Bassman 100) can get you a...

Recording that "million dollar" guitar sound

Oh, I almost forgot one of my favorite tips. If you're tight enough, do your rhythm tracks twice (onto two different tracks), then hard-pan them left and right. The sound you get is HUGE. Check out the Badwolf stuff I mentioned in my previous post, or the Extreme album "Pornograffiti" for...

Recording that "million dollar" guitar sound

Hi! This whole post is just MY OPINION. Your mileage may vary! First of all, check out the guitar tone here: http://www.mp3.com/Badwolf on songs like "Richard" and "Armed And Dangerous". now go here: http://www.mp3.com/HotterThanKarl and listen to "Self-Destruct For Me" I can tell you...

    Driving an SR-16?

I'm curious if the MIDI tempo clock in my Fostex D-160 can be used to start or regulate the tempo of my Alesis SR-16 drum machine. Obviously, I can just put down a drum track with the SR-16 and use IT as the tempo reference, but if I wanted to use the internal metronome of the D-160, can I...

    Which mixer for D-160

Well, it would depend greatly on features. Ideally, I'd like something at or under $800, but fully digital is going to require something more in the range of $1100, methinks. I have an old Soundtraqs studio board (16x8x2) that has served me well, but it's getting old. I really don't NEED...

Feel free to check out the acoustic stuff

Hey Teddie, I checked out yer stuff over on mp3.com. I really liked "Morning Light", but it was all fresh, honest, and well-recorded. Sounds like you and I are in a similar boat to a certain extent (at least my solo stuff is)... i.e., one dude doing bass, drums, guitars, vocals, backing...

Feel free to check out the acoustic stuff

Wow. Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I realize that it's uncommon to have a purely acoustic CD (with the exception of one track) that doesn't even have bass... especially when I play bass. My next solo CD will have the full production. Also, I'm singing lead on several songs that...

Feel free to check out the acoustic stuff

Well, I've upgraded since then to a Foxtex D-160 that I LOVE, but at the time I was using a Fostex R8, an older SoundTraqs 16x4x2 board, a cheapo DBX compressor, and a CAE (200?) condensor mic. I borrowed a semi-decent Yamaha verb for mixdown and mixed to a Sony DAT that I rented. You can find...

or even (shudder) the 3630 compressor?

Further still... what gear in the same price range DO you recommend? Thanks much!

or even (shudder) the 3630 compressor?

Would you care to elaborate? What in particular did you find so disappointing? I also have such a unit en route. I'm currently using a DBX unit (half-rack with just a slider that says "MORE COMPRESSION"). I was hoping the flexibility of the 3630 would be an uprade.

    Which mixer for D-160

https://homerecording.com/ubb/icons/icon5.gif I just bought a D-160 16-track hard-disck recorder and it's the bee's knees! After recording with reel-to-reel for the last decade, I am amazed by the flexibility and ease of use with the D-160. I'm curious what people would recommend for mixers...
