    Guitar Polish?

Hey - what do ya'll suggest for getting "swirl" marks out of clearcoat? What about for polishing hardware? Thanks! :D

Why digital is superior to analog

Interesting. Especially since George did JJR - considered one of the better sounding records EVER - and he did it on crappy 16 bit digital recorders.........

    a new "metal" song.

Hmmm, you must have changed the mix, the bass is a tad loud now. Guitars sound excellent. Some vocals, and real drums, and this will be stellar!

    question-mixin/mastering

Yeah, I'm curious as to which it is, although I think most rappers refer to a "beat' as a backing track, not the tempo of a track.

    Compression... and/or equalizing..?

At the same time, if you can get a big beefy kick straight to tape, it will be MUCH easier to tone it back (if the mix needs it), than try and take a poorly recorded kick and make it big and beefy. I will agree though, that the better I get at this, the more I already have in mind how I want...

    Compression... and/or equalizing..?

The best research you can do is more mixing. Just keep at it, and post your work in the MP3 clinic. You'll get shit-tons of help.......

    Compression... and/or equalizing..?

Sounds like you have the gist of it. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. It's kind of like asking how to remove a brain tumor on on internet forum. The simple answer is take out the bad stuff, and leave the good stuff. Works for mixing too. Cut out, or de-emphasis what's not needed...

Mixing In The Box / Outside The Box

Ummmm, I wasn't joking. It's a fact. Yeah, I kind of sidetracked the debate from analog vs. digital, to digital vs digital. You could argue all day about A vs D, but in the end, it's all subjective. My only point was that digital summing is all the same. You cannot add two numbers together...

Mixing In The Box / Outside The Box

What?!?!?! What about all those fancy light, and buttons, and knobs, and levers?1!?!?!?!? :D My computer is literally a black box with two tiny lights. I'm sure yours looks way cooler. ;) :D :D :D

Mixing In The Box / Outside The Box

I guess you lost me here. There is no way to make 1+1 not = 10 in ANY digital device. DAW Apps sound different for MANY MANY reasons, none of which have anything to do with summing. Summing is simple addition. Think back to kindergarten - remember "finding the sum"? The beauty...

Mixing In The Box / Outside The Box

LOL. What does a hard drive have to do with it? :D

Mixing In The Box / Outside The Box

While I agree with this, ITB generally means "mixed on a computer". Now, that can mean a beige box computer, or a fancy one that "looks" like a mixing console. A digital console is just a fancy computer.

    Compression... and/or equalizing..?

Mixing has NOTHING to do with how tracks sound by themselves. You should RECORD them the best that you can, but once it gets to the mixing stage, it only matters what comes out of the two bus.

Mixing In The Box / Outside The Box

What's the debate? 1+1 = 10 No matter the DAW, the App, the Planet you're on........

    Mains hum?

I'm still betting on a ground loop. Are the monitors on the same circuit? Anything else in the chain not on the same circuit?

    Drum Sound

Yep, odd choice. The solo drums sound muddy and distant - I think mostly due to the verb. They also sound pretty lifeless. Probably could use some compression and a swift kick to the drummers ass. :D

Tape emulation in a digital DAW

It was a Cranesong HEDD. It sounds like it's mostly just doing a lite compression. If you can't afford a HEDD, look into an 1176 style comp or plug - it will do something very similar. BTW - MW is friggen amazing, and a really cool guy. He hangs out at GS all the time. edit - just...
