    Pod Xt v. BlackBox v. DigiTech ....

Just curious... anyone auditioned M-Audio's black box? I like my M-Audio products and thought that Linn's influence there might produce something useful. I just don't hear much, pro nor con, about it. Anyone used it? J.

DD55, Drum Machine, or sample controller?

The DD-55's a great machine for someone who has limited space and money, and who is comfortable playing drums with sticks and pedals. I've used the 55 for the past year with satisfactory results. Yeah, it looks toyish and the pedals are cheap, but many (not all) of the stereo samples are well...

    Pod Xt v. BlackBox v. DigiTech ....

Vadim, I haven't used all you listed, but the Johnson J-Station still works great for me in the studio. It handles cleaner tones particularly well, which is why I prefered it to the others I tried a few years ago, and it's often available on ebay for a decent price. Best, J.

    Harvey in Recording Magazine

Harvey, you don't know me, but I've been reading your helpful posts here for years. Moreover, you seem to be a gentleman in all you do, something I increasingly appreciate in the fairly anonymous world of online forums. I'm happy to see good things happen for good people and look forward to my...

First 10 Days with my new KRK VXT6's

Nate, your review is of that rare breed that really means something to me. Thanks for putting some effort into it. By the way, just today I read a very positive review of one of the new KRK models (Paul White in the current SOS mag). Enjoy your new sound, J.

    Damn a lot of hiss...

Welcome, Stab. I use an SP B1 with a cheap pre (internal in my Yamaha aw16g) for recording acoustic guits, and the sound is completely free of hiss at normal volumes. I agree that the problem isn't with that mic unless it's broken. I'd simply try another pre to find out. M-Audio's DMP3...

    Thinking of getting Rubicon monitors

Barry, I just noticed your from Stockholm. I've spent a lot of time in Lund, where my father's family is from, and list Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) among my favorite musicians these days. Lots happening musically there it seems. Let us know how the Rubicons work out. Enjoy. J.

    Thinking of getting Rubicon monitors

Barry, I know nothing much about the Rubicons, but I always pass along the same thought: I read equipment reviews in most major recording mags, and the Rubicons, even the small model, have received some of the most consistently positive reviews across the board for lower-end monitors. Your good...

    Effects to emulate pedal steel?

Exactly. And two other tips: Cut the high freqs quite a bit to keep the sound round and smooth, and try some light delay (2-3 repeats) for more fullness. Oh, if if you don't have a volume pedal, just use a gate to slow down the attack--if you like a softer entrance. I do. Best, J.

What does it mean when your monitor....

Sounds like the monitor cable problem I had recently. I had the fade-ins/-outs and lower volume at times. All that disappeared simply with a new cable. J.

    TASCAM's VLX5 vs. M-Audio BX5a Studio Monitors

I'm with you. So yesterday I took the 40-min drive to my local GC, and they have a new line of 6.5" active monitor for my friend to consider--Alesis 620s: http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_alesis_m1_active_620_100w_active_nearfield_reference_monitors?full_sku=103740866&src=4WFRWXX...

    TASCAM's VLX5 vs. M-Audio BX5a Studio Monitors

Would you do me and my friend a favor and let us know your opinion once you get the Tascams? We'd appreciate it. Thanks, J.

    TASCAM's VLX5 vs. M-Audio BX5a Studio Monitors

Sean, just to mention that I'm helping a local musician set up his tiny studio, and I've listed the Tascams as one option. I'm just a musician, not a serious studio cat, but I like to listen and read a lot. I've never used the Tascams myself but keep reading rather positive reviews (value for...

    Sub Placement

I have an M-Audio BX5/SBX set-up myself, and that's where my sub is--centered, just below my mixing desk, away from corners. Sounds great, works fine for me. Many factors affect the overall sound, of course, depending on the level of quality you need. The pro folks here will wisely suggest room...

    Lamps on top of monitors?

I use mouse pads under my monitors and small gel wrist pads, too, near the front edge to angle the monitors slightly upward toward my ears. Cheap and workable. J.

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

I'm sure it will help if you spend the time to integrate it effectively. Get past that urge to go for "big low end" and let it just fill in enough to extend the low freqs naturally. Use some good reference CDs to compare the sound to other systems, and I think you'll end up with a pretty...
