Should we assume the level indicator is into the 'yellow zone' while hitting the drum with average hits?
You're trying to record a marching snare with the standard kit snare config, which assumes overheads. This is why I suggested a condenser a couple feet away.
Run "normalize", bring up the...
Yes, your best most expensive mic if I'm reading between the lines correctly. Experiment with the snare in different rooms, garage for example with harsh floor versus bedroom with soft floor. I say 24" because it's close enough to catch all the snare, yet far enough way to grab some ambiance...
Forget the name stamped on it until you know which sound you like. Go to a local shop, tap on some cymbals & find what you're after. If they don't play ball pricewise, get on ebay & find the one(s) you like used. Keep in mind the nature of the beast, two of the same cymbal won't always sound...
Here's the best breakdown I'm aware of:

I'd go for some 2-ply 'plasticy' batters for that kind of music, Fiberskyns are for the old farts ;)
Everyone avoiding these is a good thing if you've got a bit of geek in you, don't mind digging though google, etc. You can chain four of them for what one cost a few years ago, when it was among the highest rated starter setups... Of course chaining four would be silly while its big brother...
Thank you! I put them together on the average budget, just took a few years. You can do it if you really want.
Toms are 60's Ludwig 3-ply w/rings, Bass is 70's Ludwig 28" Marching, wrap from sambarnard.net. Electronics are 80's Tama Techstars.
They sound pretty much like they look ;)
The hub might introduce latency; I'm sure someone will confirm, deny, or call me goofy. Nothing more frustrating than hearing your sounds a split second after triggering.
I'm in the process of shopping for a MIDI Controller also. My criteria is simply 61+ keys, good feeling action, decent...
Does cork tile have any effect on the acoustic properties of a room, good or bad?
I'm mostly leaning towards it for the convenience of tacking sheet music & notes to the wall, but it'd be a dandy perk if it also helps to tone down outside noise & keep a bit in, cut down reverb, etc.
Edit: One...
You like the sound & behaviour, but not how it sounds recorded.
Correct?
I think the solution would be more in mic'ing than muffling. What's your setup? If nothing else, I can help you ask the right question. If you're really asking how to tune or muffle a drum, I can go on for a long time.
You're a Bonzo fan, they're on their own! :D
I love seeing drummers today influenced by Zepp/Bonzo, we are a dying breed. I'm sorry this wasn't much help, but hang in there big guy!
Edit: ... A couple hours later (sorry, I'm still celebrating the holidays, and have had a few beverages)... I...
Hydraulic heads are the extreme end of the voice spectrum of drum heads. They're two sheets of plastic with oil between.
I'd recommend buying one the size of your most offensive drum and trying it out. This is art & nobody can tell you what kind of paint to use... If they try, you shouldn't...
Is this only when mic'ed, or all the time?
A few options come to mind:
If you only want to lose attack for certain songs & moods, mallets are great. You can get standard sticks with felt mallet butts pretty much everywhere nowadays, very handy for quick changes in mood.
If you want full time...
