Putting the lava lamps on-top of your monitors - that's brave!
I've spent most of today clearing my studio out in preparation for some big changes. Mental note to self - don't use so many cable ties next time!
Yes, both are 24 bit. The main differences are the MKI has a built in midi tone module whilst the MKII has some extra FX options (acoustic simulator, 4/8 simultaneous noise gates etc), larger hard drive and faster CD burner. The sound quality is basically identical though.
I googled around a bit and there is some suggestion that in theory a hard drive's life could be shortened if mounted vertically because the bearing fluid would run to one bottom. However, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that this actually does happen and at any rate mounting at 90 degrees...
When I brought my 788 I couldn't imagine ever needing more than 8 tracks but pretty soon I could see creative possibilities with more.
It's the same with my 2488. 2 years ago I'd never have believed I'd need more than 24 tracks for a song. Now I can see the possibilities with 48 tracks! I...
Yep. As a test I synched up my old 788 with my MKI and it worked absolutely flawlessly. 48 tracks, 14 inputs (you use 2 on the master machine to bring the audio from the slave unit), 2 internal stereo loops, 4 external sends - what a setup!
I doubt you will be able to download an update for the MKII to Neo - you couldn't do so from MKI to MKII and I think there are a few minor changes to the controls. Personally, I don't think the mastering tools alone would make it worth me upgrading to the new model but I am hopefully of some...
One of the things that bemuses me is why most of the more expensive competitors are limited in how many tracks they can playback in 24 bit mode e.g. the AW2400 can only play 12 tracks simultaneously at the higher bit rate). Obviously these machines may be better in other areas but at this price...
I had a quick scan through the manual and that's all I could find. Not sure about the effects patches compared to the MKII as I only have a MKI. Someone mentioned Livewriter but I believe that features on the MKII? I guess it's only been about 18 months since the last release so it's evolution...
New version of the 2488 with added mastering tools. Got to say I much prefer the new look to the blue though if I can get a good deal on a MKII it's not gonna be a deal breaker!

IMO like most effects reverb has it's place but you can over use it.
For guitars I generally use a subtle amount of the amp's own spring reverb (I've never heard a good digital simulation of one - they always seem either in-audible or too extreme)
For drums I tend to opt for a small to medium...
The DP-02 is only 16bit if I'm not mistaken where as the 2488 is 24bit and obviously has a much higher track count.
But if using an external mixer and Reaper then why not just get a simple 2in / 2out audio interface and record straight to your PC?
Potential phase issues aside I see no reason why that wouldn't work. You probably could share an FX unit by using an external line mixer to combine the AUX ouputs from both units and then routing the FX unit outputs back into the master 2488. There does seem to be a lot of possibilties including...
Yep will sync them up using MTC in a Master-Slave configuration. Actually by routing the line / monitor outputs of the slave device into the master unit you can pre-master all 48 tracks on one machine though backups have to be done seperately. Monitoring connections need only by made through the...
